Q: iOS 10 SMS and iMessage notification issues

Hello all,

Having some issues with SMS and iMessage notification since upgrading to iOS 10. The issue is that sometimes there will be no sound or vibration or anything when I receive a message. I will just happen to pick up the phone and there will be a banner on the lock screen. And before anyone asks, it's not that I've been away from the phone, or I didn't hear it go off...there was just no notification. It's as if the phone was in DND (which it wasn't).

The other thing is, I NEVER get a notification when I am sent an iMessage from a sender that is email address only (such as from a wifi only iPad). In this situation, my phone never plays a sound, never vibrates...but you open up the lock screen and there is a new message banner sitting there...like I said before - just like the phone is in DND...which it is not.

This problem is happening on both mine and my wife's phone. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I Had this exact problem, and have just found the fix. I had somehow managed to set the contact to do not disturb open the conversation from iMessage select the I in the top right hand corner and make sure do not disturb is off in there. This sorted it for me.

sorrry to hear it didn't work, i must say I've been rather unimpressed with iOS 10 and the amount of bugs in it, I have been a die hard apple fan for quite a number of years now but can't help but feel like there losing there way a bit and are relying on the loyalty of people who have bought heavily in to the brand. Hope you get this sorted soon, or they release a much needed update soon!!

I had the same problem and I realize the problem was with the bluetooth connection. When I disabled my bluetooth from my apple watch I started to notice my phone started to act normal. I also have notice this bug also effect my connecting to my car. My connectivity goes in and out while I'm trying to listen to apple music. I also found that Siri won't read my text messages back unless I unlock my phone every time while I'm drive and I'm connected via bluetooth to a Siri enable vehicle. Apple really need to fix these bluetooth problems.

I spoke with Apple support this morning as it's not just the sounds I'm having issues with but the call quality on my phone. they ran a diagnostics check and it came back to say it was a software issue but didn't know the exact issue. so I've  now got to mess about restoring factory settings from iTunes running another diagnostic check and if it's ok restoring from iCloud. But if theres still an issue I have to erase the phone set it up as new and manually add everything back on the phone. Which I am not about to do when this is supposed to be a new phone and that is too much hassle. So if it's not sorted after the first thing they suggested I'll be taking it to the Apple Store and getting the handset switched for a new one.

I read the whole thread looking for an answer. I think I found it: turn off bluetooth.

    Didn't work

    1. Turning off DND
    2. Hard reset
    3. Changing "Send & Receive"

Someone mentioned bluetooth so I gave it a shot, and this seems to work. I've tried several combinations where I turn on/off bluetooth and wifi. Wifi has no effect, but bluetooth ON consistently produces the error. What's weird is that I don't have any bluetooth devices connected. They all show "Not Connected", and I've triple checked that the devices are powered off.

Very weird, but I hope Apple takes this info and fixes this obvious, software bug.

I have been searching for answers too.....so many problems, but the alert tone is the worst, and tonight I realized that after I accidentally bumped the bluetooth "off" that a text came through and it actually had a tone. So I got my daughter to text me and with Bluetooth off it worked, and then turned Bluetooth on and it didn't work, so I turned it off again and she texted me and it worked again. I was just coming on here to let others know.

What does perplex me is that I have not set up bluetooth connectivity to my car or anything else, so I have no idea how this is supposed to make any sense. I am used to leaving Bluetooth on so it can auto cut in when a call comes through and I'm driving etc. Now I have to turn it on when I get in the car and off when I get out. I'm regretting buying this iPhone 7, and updating to the latest IOS.

Apple takes away the headphone jack and wants us all to go wireless, yet their Bluetooth has bugs.....seriously Apple for the first time since buying my first Apple product, I'm seriously regretting it and wishing I went android. I've had way too many issues since I got this phone and upgraded the IOS.

I am one very unhappy customer

TThis is one thing I haven't tried, so I'm going to give this a shot and see if it fixes this issue with my alert tones so at least I can identify the root of the problem for that. Thanks

To turn off bluetooth fixed it for me too, but: I have an AppleWatch, so I must have BT turned on.

I Didn't think about it til my Apple watch wasn't working. So the Bluetooth fix isnot working for me... if you find out what  works with the Apple Watch, I'd love to know. This is driving me crazy.  I'm not happy right now.

    Hi all,

For me this also started after changing to iPhone 7 plus. After investigation I found out that it came from the combination of the iPhone and my Macbook Pro. If my macbook is turned on I don't hear a sound or see a new incoming SMS. If I shutdown my MBP everything works fine. Never had this on my iPhone 6 plus.

    hello!

Did you pair your mobile phone (blue tooth) with your laptop? if I turn off Bluetooth on my iPhone everything works fine.

SkorProd noted that this is a combo of iPhone and MBP. I've confirmed that too. Turning off Bluetooth on my MBP allows me to get text notifications when my iPhone is locked.

I also just tested this in my car. I connected the phone to the BT in the car and started playing music through the phone. I sent myself a text and quickly locked the phone. The text arrived, and I was able to hear the text notification though the car's BT audio.

So yeah, I think that SkorProd is onto something. This bug really seems like a combination of iPhone + MBP.

Ever since IOS 10, been having a blue dot show up next to a text message on the messaging screen when a new text comes in from that person, but it still shows an older text received from that person and takes up to a minute for the list to refresh. You have to tap on that person and go into the message to see the new text you received. This is irregardless to the DND setting.
