Q: iOS 10 SMS and iMessage notification issues

Hello all,

Having some issues with SMS and iMessage notification since upgrading to iOS 10. The issue is that sometimes there will be no sound or vibration or anything when I receive a message. I will just happen to pick up the phone and there will be a banner on the lock screen. And before anyone asks, it's not that I've been away from the phone, or I didn't hear it go off...there was just no notification. It's as if the phone was in DND (which it wasn't).

The other thing is, I NEVER get a notification when I am sent an iMessage from a sender that is email address only (such as from a wifi only iPad). In this situation, my phone never plays a sound, never vibrates...but you open up the lock screen and there is a new message banner sitting there...like I said before - just like the phone is in DND...which it is not.

This problem is happening on both mine and my wife's phone. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was also seeing this issue.  As instructed above, my iMessage notifications began to work again if my MacBook (which was always nearby) Bluetooth is turned off.  As soon as I turn it back on, the iMessages will no longer notify.  Thanks to whoever gave this solution above.  It works for me.

    Hi all,

If you cannot disable your bluetooth on your MacBook, because of using a Magic Mouse for example, you can also logout your AppleID account in the Messages app on your MacBook.

If you have bluetooth enable. Turn it off.... Your notifications sound be back to normal. Bluetooth is causing the problem.

SkorProd is on a tear! I turned on Bluetooth on my MBP and disabled my accounts in Messages (I don't use Messages on MBP anyway), and now I'm getting all the notifications that I expect.

It seems that this is a macOS bug rather than an iOS bug. I hope the next update of macOS fixes it, but this is a fine work around for me.

    macOS 10.12 (16A323), MacBookPro11,3

    iPhone 7 128 GB, iOS 10.0.2, Verizon

Since I updated my 64 Gb Iphone 6S to IOS 10 my phone does not alert me that a TXT message came in and sometimes a TXT sent from another AT&T cell phone is delayed more than 30 minutes to arrive... This is is certainly a major issue for mobile users. Work around, have to use WhatsApp in order to get the services I paying my carrier to supply, I am not sure that only AT&T users are impacted by this defect but I can see that this is not an issue with other phones I have in my family plan that were not updated to IOS 10 yet.

My dad and I have both been having this issue. He is using an iPhone 6 I am using a 6S+. Neither of us owns a MacBook or other Apple desktop product. I have an iPad Air and Pebble Time Watch connected. The pebble and iPad are getting notifications but the phone does not show them.

First, regarding Apple Watch and Bluetooth. When the iPhone and watch are set up normally, and if the iPhone is off, then (by design) a text notification goes directly to the watch, it doesn't light up or make any sound on the iPhone.

When I upgraded to my iPhone 7 and restored the watch to the new phone, the haptic setting for "Prominent Haptic" got turned off. So even though I had haptic strength at maximum, I wasn't feeling the haptic tap when a text came in. So I thought notifications were dead. Then I went and turned off Bluetooth on the iPhone, and now the watch was not connected, so incoming texts light up the phone and make lots of noise. It looked like Bluetooth was the culprit, when in fact everything was working normally except that without the prominent haptic I was getting the notice on my watch, but not feeling the tap and seeing the text on my watch. After I turned Prominent Haptic on, everything was working for me as before.

I did have the other issue that was reported. When the iPhone was on and a text came it, I wasn't getting a notice, hearing a sound or seeing the text notice drop down on the screen. I called Apple and their recommended solution was to Reset All Settings. This fixed that issue. So at this point everything is working normally.

If you do Reset All Settings, it's not too bad, except you will need to turn Siri back on, reset Touch ID, turn back on Find my iPhone. There may be some other things I need to turn back on but I haven't found them yet.

Following your advice, disabling bluetooth has restored text alerts for me.

The difficulty with this for me is that I also use a Wi-Fi only iPad - having the email address checked on my iPhone is the only way I can use it to send SMS messages (not iMessages.)  Hoping for an early fix from Apple here... I've already tried everything mentioned in this thread.
