Where is Play Later?

I just updated my iPad mini to iOS 10 and the "Add to up next" option is no longer there. After searching a bit, I've discovered that there is supposed to be a new feature, underneath Play Next, called Play Later. However, I don't have this feature. Regardless of whether or not there's anything in my queue, I only have Play Next. Is this an oversight? A bug? Any help would be appreciated. I use this feature constantly.

The "Play Next" and "Play Later" options also disappear when an iOS 10 device is plugged into an iPod-compatible music system. They re-appear when the device is unplugged.

Details:I'm using an iPhone 7 with iOS 10.2.1 plugged into the USB port of a 2017 Toyota Highlander with the highest trim infotainment system (Entune Premium with JBL: it has support for iPod integration and Siri eyes free, but not CarPlay).

(Also: JPEG orientation information is mishandled in the upload by Safari on my iPhone, so this image was sent from my MacBook).

I think I figured it out!!!

It only shows "Play Later" if the FIRST SONG you start playing is while you are in "Album" or "Artist" view - NOT while in "Song" view. (Note this is on an iPhone 6S - but I'll be all iPhones with Force Touch work the same way)

Test this by:

1) Force quit the Music app

2) Start the Music app

3) Go to "Albums" or "Artists" (or even "Downloaded Music" -> "Albums" or "Artists" and tap a song to play it

4) Now, wherever you go, you can force press a song and see "Play Now" AND "Play Later" - even if you go to "Songs" or "Downloaded Music" -> "Songs"

And you can see where it DOESN'T have "Play Later":

1) Force quit the Music app

2) Start the Music app

3) Go to "Songs" or "Downloaded Music" -> Songs" and tap a song to play it

4) Now, wherever you go, you can force press a song and you WON'T see "Play Now" AND "Play Later" - even if you go to "Albums", "Artists", or "Downloaded Music" -> "Albums" or "Artists".

This seems like a bug. I'm going to see if I can report this somewhere.

Nice observation, LJurow. It seems that, if you browse to music in your library, selecting a song will play it, and also fill songs into the Up Next queue. Exactly which songs get filled depends on whether Shuffle is turned on when you select the first song. If shuffle is selected, all the songs in the current listing (album, artist, all songs...) are added. If shuffle is off, then only songs 'after' the selected one are added, in order. After the Up Next queue gets sufficiently large, Apple won't show the "Play Later" option, as very few people are really thinking that "Play Later" means "play many days from now".

If you want to download music automatically

The first time that you download music to your device, you might see a message that asks if you want to download music automatically.

  • Tap Download Automatically to download all songs, albums, or playlists automatically to your device. The next time you add music to your Library, it also automatically downloads to your device.
  • Tap Not Now to download the music later.

If you want to turn on Automatic Downloads for all music that you add to your Library in the future, go to Settings > Music, then scroll to the Downloads section and tap Automatic Downloads.

What I've found is that if you go under Albums, you can choose an album and then add it to Play Next by tapping the three dots to the right of the album picture. You can also go under Artists, select an artist, select on of their albums, and do the same.

However, this adds the entire album to Up Next; so if there are multiple songs, some of which you don't want in the queue, you then have to go to Up Next and manually remove the ones you don't want. Additionally, it looks like you can no longer reorder the Up Next queue.

Sadly it looks like they gutted this feature.

I have the same problem. When I play some playlist and try to setup the play queue I have only the "Play Next" option. The "Play Later" is never available.

I've read that on devices with force touch the "Play Later" option is available in extended menu which appears if you force touch on the song. I can't check it, but on my iPhone 6 it's not possible at all to see it.

Please fix this bug ASAP.

I've used this option every time I listen the music. And now it ruins my everyday experience so much, it incredibly frustrating!!!
