I need to print part of a map, at a readable size, but not the whole map. I don't want to create throwaway files just for this. Any ideas?
I tried a magnifying glass, when the first attempt was too small to read, but the size changes were disorienting and zoom effects trigger my migraines, so that wasn't an option.

Why not. That's how you do it.
Just open the file in Preview, Duplicate, Crop, Print, Close without saving.
If you have an app that will open a jpg and let you print the selection, that might solve your problem. I don't own any that do that.
Or select the area, command-c to copy, command-n to create a new image from the clip, command-p to print, and close w/o saving.
