Q: Can't buy program from credit in itunes account

Earlier today I was helping a friend buy an itune gift card and then buy a game (mindcraft) from the app store.  The credit from the card shows up on the bottom left hand corner of the account ipad screen so we know the  money made it into the account. When she went to purchase the game the ipad screen wanted credit card information, but the money was already in the account and we wanted to use the money already in the account, and not buy it with a credit card

How can we get this to work properly?

Thank you.

What exactly happens when she tried to buy something e.g. what she being asked to verify or review her payment details ? And is this the first time that she's tried to download something from the store ? As long as her balance covers the game's total price (including any applicable taxes) any card she enters shouldn't be charged (except for a temporary charge : About payment card authorization holds in the iTunes Store - Apple Support)

When she went to pay for her program you would think she would get a screen that wants to take the amount off the credit from her gift card.  What she gets is a screen that wants credit card information.  Yes, this is the first time she made a purchase from the store.

Brian said in a reply "A credit card/ debit card still needs to be on your account go to itunes main page apple ID

Click on id go to view account manage payments" .  Maybe this is the thing to do.  Finish filling out the credit card information but when to comes time to pay use the credit from the gift card.

    Thank you.

Unless the account was created using these instructions : Create or use your Apple ID without a payment method - Apple Support

then payment details will need to be entered before the account can be used - you should be able to remove the card after after entering it (you don't need to continue to have a card on the account).

you would think she would get a screen that wants to take the amount off the credit from her gift card.

You won't get a screen asking how items are paid-for, it's automatic - if there is a balance on the account it will be used, otherwise the card on the account, if there is one, will be used.

We found the solution today with the help of phone support.  Someone had configured the computer for family share before I even looked at it, and family share requires a credit card number.  So the solution was to turn off family share, then we could check none in payment options and the money was taken off the gift card.

    Thank you.
