Q: iMovie 10.1.2 imported media not in events

iMovie 10.1.2 on Macbook pro mid 13"mid 2012 OS 10.11.6  I spent several evenings importing media from a digital camcorder.  The media imported all appears in various projects on the project window page.  I can review and edit it.  But it is not in event library and project is not listed in movie library.  Older items imported from previous iterations of iMovie are there.  I am totally confused.  I have tried reading the documentation.  I also do not get the dialogue to select a theme.  I tried creating a movie in a new library on a brand new drive and still cannot find media.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi, KathleenH,

Your projects appear in the Projects screen, so that means that they are in your iMovie library.   In Finder, click on your Movies folder, and then control-click on the iMovie Library folder, and then Show Package Contents.   You should then see a list of all your projects.  Don't disturb or change anything or you will disrupt the Library structure and potentially cause corruption of the library.

Within iMovie itself, go to the Media browser and select iMovie library in the pane displayed on the left of your screen.  Click on the little triangle to the left of the iMovie LIbrary menu item and that should display a list of your projects as well.  It may not display all of them, but no matter.

I followed your directions in first paragraph and the projects are listed, at least everything is not lost.

In the media browser only pre 2015 projects are listed and have contents.  The 2015 event contains no media although it did last week.  The problem is I cannot make one movie with clips from all the different video I have because I have no access to imported video to one project when making another project.  This sort of flies in the face of what iMovie promises. I am going to have to import all that video into one project to edit.

I fear I am going to have to find all  the underlying digital files and then remove and reinstall iMovie then reimport the video.  Unless there is some way to rebuild the library.

When you imported your media, did you import into an existing event or create a new event as the destination?  Your media should be located in one of those two places.  When you click on Library in the media browser, is your media displayed?

I find it much easier to import my media to Photos, where it is all in one place, and then access it from there in iMovie, or sometimes from folders in the finder.   If you can reimport to Photos that might be the easiest solution.

As a work around, you can always import your media to a file on your desktop and from there import it into iMovie as needed.

Re your question about selecting a theme, after you create a new project click on the settings button at the right hand middle side of your screen. A window will pop up with a theme box where you can select your theme.

Actually in one case I inadvertently imported to an existing event. Subsequently I created new projects and imported to those.  In neither case is that imported media available in Media browser. When I click in media browser media is not displayed. In future all files will be imported to iPhoto or distal files. I dislike GoPro studio but I think I will change to using it. I have several days of time in these projects now wasted.

    Here's a thought, Kathleen,

When you clicked on your Movies folder in the finder, as you did before, and control-clicked on the iMovie Library folder, and then clicked on Show Package Contents, you saw a list of all your projects. If you click on each project, you will see a folder called Original Media.  That folder contains the media for your project.   Group select the media and then, while pressing down the OPTION KEY, copy-drag the media to a folder on your desktop.  From there you can import it into iPhoto and/or Photos.   That will consolidate your media in one place where you can access it from iMovie no matter which project you are working on.   Just be sure to hold down the OPTION KEY as you copy-drag the selected media out of the Original Media folder, or you could mess up your library structure and disable your project.  You want to copy the media, not move it.  That should work, and save you the time of doing all that re-importing.

If you try it, let us know how it came out.

Thank you.  I will try that tonight.  I really did not want to watch all that video again.  Once I get digital files.  I will try iMovie on my Mac mini and see if I have better luck.
