I solved this by plugging the Apple Pencil into the Lightning Port on my iPad Pro 9.7 -- once I did the Battery widget came up showing both iPad & Apple Pencil Battery level.

Note - the updated Guide for iPad for IOS10 only have one reference to the Apple Pencil indicating it can be used with Notes app

This did not happen on my full size iPad Pro. I had tried to use the pencil in notes and it did not work. Then realized the battery was dead. Plugged it in and it charged and worked in notes, but no widget.

HA! I found it. In noteifications. Swipe down from the top of any screen and then swipe right and calendars, battery and pencil are there.

MY iPad 9.7 does not show the pencil in the iOS 10 pull down notifications like it used to in iOS 9. When I plug the pencil into the iPad the battery notification still doesn't show. But in Settings for Bluetooth, it indicates it is connected. I can even write in the Notes app.  In notifications, left column all I get is the Calendar notification.

Found it.  Turns out the battery widget is now in the right column of notifications. I have a lot on notifications and I hadn't scrolled all the way down to see it. In iOS 9 the battery widget used to be in the left column, which is very short.  I guess installing ios 10 reset everything.

Now, I tapped on the edit button and dragged the battery widget from the bottom of RIGHT to the LEFT panel.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm relatively new to iOS and just installed iOS 10 on my iPad 9.7 today.

I modified the widgets so the pencil battery shows 1st on the right swipe, but wanted to know if I can put it back on the down swipe, where it was on iOS 9?

After upgrade to iOS 10, the Battery widget was missing from the pull down list of widgets on my iPad Pro.   In this instance the solution was to edit the list of widgets to remove the Battery widget (according to Edit it SHOULD have been displayed all along.)   After I re-added the Battery widget, it appeared at the bottom of the list of widgets and a few seconds later began to display status of both the iPad Pro battery as well as the Apple Pencil battery.

This smells like a software bug to me.

Hi iPad Pro with 9.3.5 here. Same issue, battery widget is gone, cannot check on battery level of Apple Pencil.

I just called AppleCare Germany and the support told me that this is actually an Apple system issue.  Even without updating my iOS version this seems to have changed in the background maybe due to an iCloud change.  This should be solved in the next couple of days  and the battery widget should reappear.  At least that's what they told me.

This was answered before but will repeat here.  Swipe down from the top to display the page of recent transactions.  Now swipe left to right to display an assortment of news, music, etc boxes.  There are two columns.  The battery level info on my ipad was all the way at the bottom of the crowded right column..  Needed to scroll down to see it.  at the bottom of the left column there is an edit button. Click on that and an edit page appears.  Locate the battery widget an click and hold on the three grey bars on the right side and slide the battery widget up and drop where it says left column.  Probably more room there so you won't need to scroll.

I tried other suggestions but this is the only one that worked.
