Q: Location being used icon always on

In the last 3 weeks or so I have the location being used icon on my homescreen at least 90% of the time and it seems to be draining my battery in a big way. I only have Citymapper, maps and compass set to use it and they are all set to 'while using'. I can go into Privacy, Location Services to see which apps are/were using it and none of them have the icon indicating recently used, yet it's still showing on my homescreen. I have closed down every single app completely and the icon is STILL there. I updated to iOS 10 last night and it's still the same. I didnt change any settings before this suddenly started happening. Any ideas?

    Hello RandomGirl79,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Based on your post, I see that in the last three weeks or so, the location services icon is on your home screen at least 90% of the time, and it appears to be draining your battery. You have changed the apps to while using in Location Services, closed the apps, and the icon is still there. I know how important it is to make sure that your location services feature works only when you want it to, and also that you have long battery life on your iPhone. I have a few things for you to try.

First, I would advise to try this at a different physical location, and on Wi-Fi and cellular data, to see if you get the same result with the location services icon remaining active while the apps are closed.

Then, please take a look at the following articles that will help check the battery usage on your iPhone and maximize battery performance:

    Best Regards.

The icon is there all the time no matter where I am and whether I'm on wifi or 4G. I have switched ALL the apps to 'never' and it's STILL there...... I dont have background refresh on and never have. Any more ideas please? I have a spanking new iPhone 7 and the battery is terrible because of this issue, thanks

Because there are system services that also use location services, I would try going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services and check if those features are still turned on. You can also try turning off Location Services altogether and also restarting your device as the shut down and start up process is important to keep the iOS software running properly:

    Location Services
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Have a great day and thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

Hi, currently on a chat with one of your advisors. Ive done a hard reset of the phone, reset all settings, reset network settings and now waiting on a 20 min wait for a senior advisor because now none of my apps show under the location services toggle button.....

I looked at System Services earlier and I had already turned off all the location based ads etc and the diagnostic options, which I have just turned off again, I have compass calibration, sos, find iphone, mobile network search, motion, time zone, wifi networking switched on (as I imagine I need all of those) - but if not which ones do I turn off?

Solved it myself - it was Compass Calibration in System Services being on! Phew - at least two months of this and finally sorted!! Yesssssss
