Q: There is chinese or japanese writing on my lock screen in ios 10

Aloha Bob. It's even easier if you get the iPad Google Translate app. It can see into photos for a graphical language like Chinese.

I tried adding a second language to the language settings, but that has no effect on the lock screen, even after reboot. I'll keep an eye out, in case it turns up.

Quite right, unfortunately the app didn't care for the Silver Surfer photo.

So, I was thinking... Do you have any apps installed that are not from the Apple app store? Something like a sideloader for games maybe. I'm trying to imagine what kind of program could write to the lock screen.

It seems you have Alternate Calendar turned on. Go to Settings>Calendar and choose Alternate Calendars to off.

It looks like you are absolutely correct. I just tried it and got the Chinese date on the Lock screen just as the other posters have. Who knew? Now then only mystery is how was it turned on in the first place.
