    From the article linked below:
You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:-
Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software available

well on my ipod it the updates use up 88 mb. how much is it supposed to use up?

Yes, that sounds like probably an appropriate amount of space being used by the update...if you meant to write "GB" in place of "MB", of course, that's a different story.

"well on my ipod it the updates use up 88 mb. how much is it supposed to use up?"

Since the iPod updater contains the software for all iPods that is why the file is so large.

The updater is smart enough to recognise which model iPod is connected and installs the appropriate software.

To be honest, I'm not really sure what your concern is?

i was just wondering because i wanted to add as much music as i possibly could w/ out the updates taking up my room since it isn't fully 30 gb when u buy the ipod.

You will only ever have one software version installed on your iPod at any one time.

Even if you were to update the software at a later date, the version you have currently would be replaced with the newer one.

It has to be there so there's nothing you can do.
