IOS 10 and contact custom ringtones

Hi to all,

i've just upgraded my Iphone 6s Plus to IOS10 and everything works great, but i've noticed that the custom ringtones, assigned to single contact, don't work anymore.

Anyone else have this issue ?

Thank you.

However now if you reboot phone the custom ring tone gets removed all together

This is certainly not a common problem. There was a glitch a couple of versions ago that deleted downloaded ringtones but it has long since been resolved. Apple replaced the purchased ringtones for the affected people.

I have both purchased ringtones and ones I've created. They do not disappear for any reason.

What troubleshooting steps have you taken? I'd suggest re-syncing the tones from iTunes on your computer.

I had same issue. First, followed most steps in this older article to change my ring tones to .m4r files: http://recomhub.com/blog/how-to-set-custom-ringtones-on-iphone-7-and-iphone-7-pl us/

Then, used usb cable to connect phone to computer [wi-fi sync did not work]. Once phone registered to computer iTunes, able to sync, and ringtones available for active use on new iPhone with ios 10!

+1 to Apple

This is NOT fixed.

This problem is more common that you think. Stop diminishing this issue or blaming user error.

I am a huge iOS and Apple supporter, and an engineer and software developer, and have been for decades.

Three times on three different devices over the last 16 months - EVERY song-based ringtone I took hours to assign to people, both from iTunes Store, or from my custom ringtones of all kinds (garage band, or anywhere else) have ALL been dropped from my contacts on multiple occasions.

This is really getting old. I know it happened again when I hear a default text tone for a text from my wife. "Uh oh... Not again"

Most recent was around a month ago. I didn't bother fixing it this time, I'm so tired of this.

I don't believe the conspiracy theories that they're deleting our tones so we go buy others. I _can_ believe that tone length requirements change and file type requirements change to keep virus-infected tones off our phone (remember: you're paying for security here, not unsafe flexibility like an android), but that doesn't explain why their own tones dissapear.

This is happening to me with both tones I created AND tone from iTunes. And it is very frustrating since it takes time every time to assign custom tones to key contacts.

In fact, when I just tried to add any custom tone to my wife, NONE of my iTunes or other custom tones are even listed as an option, just the built-in and classic tones.

This is definitely not fixed.

I'm not even going to attempt using custom text tones until Apple reports on this thread that this is fixed.

In fact - let's communicate this in other ways to show our frustration.

If your tones keep getting messed up or you are frustrated about what is happening to custom tones, change your default text tones to "Bamboo" until it's fixed. Everyone will hear the old tone, including Apple.

"Bamboo tone protest"

Apple please fix these issues with tones. I don't want to waste time assigning tones to people again until you have specifically repaired the problem.

No, really, it's not more common than I think. Nor am I blaming the users. That the problem not common in no way diminishes the frustration of the (relatively) few users who have the problem. In fact, if you were the only person on the planet with the problem, it will still be frustrating if it were your problem.

Rare and/or intermittent issues are some of the hardest to troubleshoot for the end user and the hardest for the developer to resolve. There's just no way around that. Realistically, Apple is not going to devote a significant amount of resources to a minor problem.

I guess i've reached the solution. Just make sure you have no any duplicates of the specific contact in your iPhone Contacts app. I had the duplicate for some reason and it was with the Default ringtone (while the main one with the custom ringtone). So after you get rid of the duplicates check whether you've assigned the right ringtone for the main instance an you are good to go!

Yep, same problem. I want to use a custom ringtone as default. The iphone support has a page about setting the default ringtone, but it doesn't tell you HOW. Useless. Just sends you to the Ringtone page in settings, where you can't make any changes.

If you go to Settings>Sounds & Haptics (or Sounds)>Ringtone. Tap on the existing ringtone. It should take you to the list of ringtones. If your custom tone has been properly installed, you just tap on it, and a check should appear next to your selection.

If you go into iTunes, and connect your iPhone, then you can take the .m4r files, located in the path below:

(PATH:: ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones)

Drag and drop the tones into the iPhone on the sidebar. To change the name, make sure you're using the same device you're syncing music and videos with and turn on Manually Manage Music and Videos.

Hope this helps!
