Sep 14, 2016 6:31 AM in response to fabiogremoby Limnos,Since any computer capable of running Mavericks (and Yosemite) can supposedly run El Capitan, Apple decided to only allow you to install the latest and "greatest" (El Capitan). If you have previously downloaded Mavericks it should be available in your purchased list, but if you have not then only El Capitan is available. I also don't know what will happen on Sept. 20 when Sirerra OS is released. Since your computer may be one of the models supported by Sierra I don't know if Apple will cut you off from El Capitan too. Personally I would log onto the Mac App Store and "purchase" El Capitan while you can, even if you do not actually download and install it yet.
El Capitan may require more RAM than you currently have on your computer. Apple says 2 GB but that is unrealistic. 4 GB minimum and most people use at least 8 GB, preferably with a SSD.
If you absolutely must have Mavericks you can try taking your computer to an Apple Store and plead your case with the people there.

Sep 14, 2016 6:31 AM in response to fabiogremoby Niel,Use a program such as the Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone it to an external drive. If the MacBook Air has a Thunderbolt port, you can also use Target Disk mode.

You could try cloning it to an external drive, then try booting from that drive. Common lore has it that OS installations are machine customized but I know with older OS versions I have transferred drives from computer to computer with no issue. If it boots then it may work, unless at some stage you try some little used feature specific to an iMac and find it is missing the support components.
