    Hello mds1962,

Thank you for bringing up the issue with your Mac, which is not restarting after the update, here in the Apple Support Communities.

The first thing I would try is to see if it boots into safe mode and then a test user. Safe mode will tell us if the issue is related to a startup item or plugins. A test user will let us know if the issue is isolated to your account, or system wide. To check safe mode and a test user, please first use this help article: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. If the computer does boot up, please check the section titled "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode" for troubleshooting steps.

To test this in another test administrator user account on your Mac, please check this help article: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. If your Mac only boots to the second test user (which you can attempt to make in safe mode if the computer boots there), there is a section in that article titled "If an issue happens in only one user account" which leads to this help article: Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue.

If the computer does not boot to either safe mode or a test user, you can try repairing the hard drive, and reinstalling the operating system. This help article will help repair the disk: Disk Utility (El Capitan): Repair a disk. And this article will help reinstall the operating system: How to reinstall OS X.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

I heard on the news tonight that there was a bug in the latest update. My early Macbook Pro keeps shutting down to where I just have a gray screen with vertical lines. I've just restarted in Safe Mode, but would like to know how to fix this. Thanks.

So, the MBP just shut down in Safe Mode. Now what? Genius Bar?
