Can I extract text from a Numbers document?

I have made a list of items in a Numbers document so I could alphabetize it. Now I'd like to copy that text to a Pages document. I select the text in the Numbers document, copy it, then paste it into the Pages document, but what appears is the table with the cells and text in it. I want just the text, no table or cells. I know I did this easily in the far distant past, but I can't figure out how to do it now. Can anyone help?

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Seems I just answered this query to 'Numbers text to rtf or pages (without formatting) ... that time I suggested pasting FIRST into a TEXT (not RTF) TextEdit document.

You can also do it by creating a TEXT BOX in your Pages document and pasting into that i.e. Replace the words Type to enter text in a new text box. Once it IS text ... maybe with Tabs between cells ... then it can be copied and pasted anywhere in your Pages document and you can remove the Text Box.

From memory Numbers and Pages 09 may have accepted copied and pasted info in a different way however since upgrading to the current versions the use of an intermediate Text Box or going via Plain text using another app like TextEdit is needed.
