itunes 12.5.1 won't link to ipad 1

Open device manager, find portable devices, click on small arrow to open it up. Select Apple iPhone. right click and select update driver software. Click browse and find C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. The system will update the driver and the device will appear in iTunes.

What if after a fresh install of iTunes, the following directory or similar directory does not exist?

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
