My Mac Pro is running El Capitan (10.11.6) and has memory 12 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC.
Recently it running very slowly. Much slower than my laptop.
Any suggestions on what is going on and what I can do/check?

I observe running the Mac "Activity Monitor" that a program kernel_task is taking most of my CPU and memory. Any suggestions? What is this "kernel_task"?
a legitimate component of the OS. As to what it's doing more information is needed.

In simple terms its OS X itself, yours seems very high, have you rebooted, does it decrease after a reboot?
I will check when I arrive at home tonight and will let you know.
