How to unconfirm faces in iOS 10?

In Photos on iOS 10, I've noticed that some photos are grouped together with faces that are similar, but not the same person. How do I separate these photos or "unconfirm" them from the assigned name? Thanks.

Howdy SoCal Cal,

It sounds like you need to change an identification you made in the Faces feature in Photos on iOS 10. These instructions should do the trick:

Fix mixed-up names and faces

If you notice that there's a photo of someone in a collection that's misidentified, you can remove it.

  1. Tap the person that you want to remove in the People album > Select.
  2. Tap Show Faces to focus on just the person’s face in each photo.
  3. Tap each photo that isn't of the person.
  4. Tap User uploaded file > Not This Person.

My question is: What happens to those faces after they have been banished from a set? Once removed they are nowhere to be found, including the Add People set, and there is no way to correctly identify them or merge them with an existing group.

Until it's clear the People feature will sync between iOS and Mac devices, I won't be investing much time using the feature.

Sounds like the right answer, BUT when I have finished Step 3, there is no option to tap for "not this person".

What am I missing? Just recently upgraded to iOS 10 on an iPhone 6. Wait, I found it. You need a step 3.b.

It is not intuitive to tap the "share" icon as if you were going to post, etc. But when you do, THEN there is a choice that says "not this person."

Maybe people like me need to change what I call that icon (box with an up arrow). It would have been more helpful if I had mentally thought of it as "Actions". Anyway, problem solved. Instructions should be more helpful to others now.

Here is a follow up question. I have removed the photos that contain a poor image of "Jack", but the key image or icon for all pictures of Jack is still stuck with one that I removed. I would like the "pick" photo to be a good likeness. Do I have to delete the person entirely and start over just to change that "key image" that shows up when you ask to see all faces in order to pick a person?

Same steps as you discovered were necessary to select "Not This Person," except you choose "Set Key Face."

  1. Select the person's set in the People album
  2. Tap "Select"
  3. Tap "Show All" (if applicable or desired)
  4. Tap "Show Faces"
  5. Select the image you want to be the key image
  6. Tap the "Share" icon (box with an up arrow)
  7. Select "Set Key Face" (you may need to scroll to the right to view the option, which you can press, hold, then drag to the desired location)

Hope this helps.

HI,

i understand the steps given, but when I press the SHARE icon, it only gives me all the old options: print, wallpaper, duplicate, etc.

i upgraded my software on my 6S...........

TKS!

Once you're inside the person's album, do not tap on the photo of the person first, then the Share button. You must first tap Select (top right), then tap a photo to select it, then tap the Share button. You'll then get the option to set it as the key face or "Not This Person."

Similar question, but is there anyway to add an additional person to the picture? For example, a picture of me and my son, but it only catches my face. I haven't figured out a way to add him to the picture, as well. It seems like it's one or the other unless the software automatically picks up multiple faces, or am I missing something?

The iPhone can recognize several persons in one photo, but if it misses one, there is no way to add the missing face manually like you can do on a Mac.

Right, I've noticed some pictures where it will recognize multiple people, but I have many pictures of me holding my son as a newborn, for example, and it only recognizes me. I was hoping I'd be able to add him so that the photo would display in both of our albums under the "people" tab. Hopefully in an update. Maybe you can answer another question...I had an album on my previous phone, which I created within the photos app, for all the photos of my son. When I setup up my new phone using my backup, that album is gone. If I search for it under "albums" I can find it, but that seems to be the only way to access it. Any ideas? Thanks again!

I think you are confusing this with something like your "cover photo" in Facebook - where you pick a scene and load it into place. The whole point of "Faces" is to find individual head shots to index and help you find the full photo. When a picture has three people A, B, and C each face will be found separately so you could later find that group shot searching for any one person. So the software works very hard NOT to have more than one face in the circle. What you are looking for is more like having an "album" of snapshots and picking one to be the album cover.

The problem I ran into was having person "G" identified in 12 photos where in some cases G is way off in the background, dark and fuzzy. The one Photos happened to pick for the "key" photo was a dark fuzzy one. So I wanted to find the way to change that for a different image of G only.
