Q: star ratings for Songs since Apple Music / newer iOS

Hi guys,

I'm not sure, whether this is the correct board, 'cause my problem would also fit to "Apple Music" or "iPhone".

Just let me explain what this is about - I'm sure that I am not the only one who suffers from Apples passion to change things without telling anyone.

Since I got an iPhone in 2010 I used iTunes to arrange my music. I don't do much with (manual) Playlists, but I always used Smart Playlists to easily get a list of songs I actually like. For that I rated my songs bit by bit with 1-5 stars (mostly only 3-5 for the good ones, the rest did not need any rating in my eyes.

With every of the last iOS / iTunes updates Apple hided the star rating somewhere else, I didn't found it in iOS 10 Music App at all. The only way to rate songs with stars seems to be Siri - what the f***k?

Two months ago I then decided to start an Apple Music subscription and I liked the possibility to discover new artists and all the other advantages. I also was sceptical if the sync between the devices via iCloud would work etc, what now seems to be valid sorrows.

I didn't import my old Media Library so far - all albums are directly from Apple Music added to my (iCloud) Media Library. So no way that this caused any problem. I started from zero rating all songs with stars in iTunes (for Windows or Mac) or in the iOS Music app. It also works fine that songs appear - after some moments - in my Smart Playlist "Favourite Songs" after they were rated with enough stars on whatever device.

But suddenly I also see some songs rated with grey stars, which (so I think) means they inherited their rating from the album they belong to. But I never meant to rate a whole album, I only rated single songs (= blue stars). Now I got no idea how to delete the unwanted album ratings. When I try rating it in album view and then delete the rating again it goes back to the grey-stars-rating and so do all the songs below.

It seems like, that the iCloud Media Librabry doesn't sync these grey rated songs to the Playlist on my iPhone.

Also the grey rated songs are different on one iTunes for Windows than they are on my MacBooks iTunes - but I got it on both, Windows and Mac.

Sometimes it helps when I logout in iTunes with my Apple ID, sometimes it don't.

Anyone got advice for this issue?

Thanks in advance!
