MacBook Pro mid-2009 won't reboot running Mavericks

Hello all,

I am having issues rebooting my MacBook Pro. everything was working fine until last night when my computer froze. Since it was frozen i held down the power key to turn it off. When attempting to reboot it was taking forever. It took a long time showing the status bar and finally screen turned black and the computer shut off.

I Tried rebooting in safe mode but I got the same results. I also tried rebooting in restore or repair mode and attempted to repair the disc. It gave me the following error: "disk utility can't this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files."

am I completely screwed or can I find a fix?

PLease help! Need my computer back ASAP for a presentation!

thank you in advance and please excuse grammar errors. I have had a helluva time posting on my iPhone!!
