Need solution for Mac Mail backup..!!

Hello,

I must start by telling you all that I am new to this mac world. As the time has passed by, i have got hold of many things of my mac os x. But there are many things that i am unable to perform or understand. One of the major things are mac mail backup. I have logged in with my gmail account in mac mail, as a frequent user of mail client, my gmail is almost full and now i want to take a backup of all the emails and the folders available on the gmail or of the mac mail to give it a more cleaner look and backup the emails yearly. Please help me get the solutions asap. Thanks.

Archiving old mailboxes is an interesting idea, but you should first look at other features provided inside Mail.

The way Apple expected you to deal with this is to create file folders (new Mailboxes) inside the mail Application. These show up under the heading "On My Mac". When you copy emails from your inbox to these file folders, they will eventually (depending on your settings) be removed from the inbox on the email Server, freeing up space.

These additional "On My Mac" mailboxes can be searched with the standard mail search, so that you can find your old correspondence quickly and easily, and use it "live" (such as creating a new email) without resorting to a restore from Archive.
