My Nano will not turn on. Tried restarting with the hold and volume button nothing happens. Plugged in to electrical outlet and it doesn't light up, screen remains black. Can't remember what gen it is but its, 2" x 2" and it is a clip on, so I can't get to the serial number which is on the inside.

The squarish iPod nano (with a clip) is 6th gen. FYI - The serial number for 6th gen iPod nano is on the clip, as shown in this document. (You don't need it for the discussion here, and you should not post it, but you may need it at some point.)

For your problem, you should rule out a faulty USB docking cable. If possible, use another docking cable that is known to be good.
If docking cable is good, and you tried with both your computer's USB port and a power outlet (using USB power adapter), the cause is probably a hardware problem on iPod. It's dock connector may be worn out and not connecting the "pins" for power. You can visually check in iPod's dock connector, to see if there's any dust or debris blocking connection. Or maybe some corrosion or physical damage. OR, the iPod's logic board may be faulty.
