iOS 10 mail app not functioning properly

I have a 6s and just downloaded iOS 10 today. My mail app inbox keeps loading the same 4 previously deleted emails and says it was last synced 8.28.2016. Then it says "checking for mail, cannot get mail, the connection to the server failed." I click ok to exit the pop up box, go click on mailboxes, then all mailboxes and it brings me to my current inbox. What does this mean and how can i fix it, so i don't have to keep going out and clicking on all mailboxes everytime? I've tried restarting my phone. Everything else is functioning properly. Thanks!

Make sure you are running 10.0.1. That is the most recent version
Delete and re-add your email account.

Now that i have done this, i cannot get my gmail calendar to sync for anything! I have tried adding and deleting and reading my gmail account several times with no luck. Everything seems to be checked right but the calendar app won't refresh to allow my gmail account to be displayed! Any thoughts on this? When i click calendars in the calendar app it only displays iCloud and other.

Delete and re-add my email account did not solve the problem.

I don't use Gmail contacts, so can't address that. However, both mail and calendars for all of my gmail accounts (and other accounts including subscribed calendars) show up fine in the native apps as well as the third party apps I use. You might check with Google support to see if they have documented anything and to verify you are using the correct settings.
