Q: page numbers in strange grayish box

Gremlins! I have a document that has page numbers in the bottom left every other page. When I click on them a box with x's around the borders shows up. I can't delete or edit the page numbers. I've never seen this box before. Please help.

There are three versions of Pages that can be installed on OS X El Capitan, and all three are different. Let's start by telling me what specific version (Pages menu : About Pages) of Pages that you are using, and then we can narrow the directions to a solution.

When you have an object with x's around the border, that is an indication that the object is locked, and to edit it, you must select, and then unlock that object.

You didn't say but it sounds like you opened a Word .doc/x file in Pages.

Those page numbers are in their own locked textboxes possibly as Master Objects.

Unlock them or make Master Objects Selectable and you can delete or change them.

Viking, thanks! Once I clicked on it, with your guidance, I noticed an "unlock" option to the right. I swear this wasn't there before, but whatever, problem solved!!
