Q: Itunes 12.5 deleting played episodes and replacing with cloud icon even though delete played episodes is turned off

This started in 12.4 last week, I updated to 12.5 today with the hope it would fix the problem. It didn't. I have a few new video podcasts I have subscribed to, when I play them they are deleted from my PC and the cloud icon appears. If I go back into the store, I can download them again, but if I mark as played, it does it again. I have checked delete played episodes for this podcast and have them manually set to NO. My manual settings for these podcasts match the default settings  as Limit Episodes NO, Download Episodes YES, Delete Played Episodes NO.

In 12.4 It was also removing them from the playlist also (a smart playlist that lists unplayed video files, my playlist which is maintained manually(i like it sorted by release date and longest file first within the release date),  Recently Added, Recently Played) which made it annoying to find which episodes just disappeared.

In 12.5 it is at least leaving them in the playlist with above issue.

This usually happens during my iPhone sync, but it has happened when I was watching them on the iPhone and it was finding the iPhone via the wireless network.

I have not noticed it in my audio podcasts but most of them I have subscribed to for years.

Since I have 707 gig in iTunes Media running on an external drive on my PC, I am very worried that I will suddenly lose everything.

iPhone SE, iOS 10, iTunes 12.5.1.21 Windows 7

No obvious thoughts on why it might happen but see Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy before you lose something that cannot be redownloaded.

I've experienced something similar/the same even with audio podcasts. (and I'm still running 12.3x and iOS 9x.) So the following may not help, and this COULD be an iOS video podcast issue: But settings often seem to get changed with updates.

Annoyingly, there appears to be no way to set do NOT "automatically delete" as the default for all podcasts on the computer. so it's necessary to change this for each playlist. This option still exists  in iOS (settings>Podcasts) at least as of iOS9.32 is it gone in 10.x?

    Some things worth trying:

    1. "Save" all episodes in iTunes on the computer. (Select a bunch, right-click)
ALSO: I could swear I used to be able to "save" episodes on the iPhone (but this could be in my imagination)

    2. If that doesn't help make sure "auto delete" is off for BOTH devices (computer/phone).

SADLY:  about the only way I could find played podcasts in iOS Podcasts was to create playlists in iTunes. The app is really geared to avoiding replays (which I guess would be the choice for most users). It still won't auto-play next podcast if it's already played, but at least it exists.

HTH. Please report back if none of the following helps. and report / whine loudly at Apple feedback.
