Q: Best format to save VHS when digitized?
I am about to digitize all my old vhs and 8mm video using the Elgato Video Capture device. I am given two options to capture. mpeg-4 and H.264. Once captured, I plan to edit the video. Anyone know of a good video editing software? I used to use FCE, but that no longer works on my computer since upgrading to elCapitan. I will probably use imovie, but their export options aren't what they used to be. And, maybe I'm just not as familiar with it, but it seems imovie's editing ability is not nearly up to that of FCE. Also for the purposes of export to different file formats, I have Quicktime Pro and Mpeg Streamclip.
What I am trying to do is capture the video and save it with the least amount of compression/video loss as possible. I also want to be able to edit the video and save it for future viewing. Basically, get it off of VHS and keep it in the best format for viewing/editing, with least amount of data loss.
If you're able to help, please answer in simple terms. I consider myself to be pretty smart, but sometimes deciphering those formats is over my head.
Thank you.
