Turn off voice control iOS 10

I can't seem to find how to turn off voice control when I hold down the home button. It is annoying when it pops up when trying to take screen shots. I hate it.

Greetings, ncfrobleg.
From your post, I believe you want to turn off Siri on your iPhone 6. I'll be glad to show you where that setting is.
For iOS 10, you tap Settings > Siri and tap the top button. If you'd rather not be able to use Siri on your Lock Screen, you can turn it off there as well.
Thanks for joining Apple Support Communities!

So you see Meg, it's not just me, and I'm not shouting, just using CAPS for emphasis. You assume and you patronise and you question why users wouldn't want to use Siri. In all these things you completely miss the point. Forums are for opinions and it's obvious what people think of this latest foul up from Apple.

Not quite as bad as the Maps debacle but damaging nonetheless. And you're wrong. Apple do monitor and read this forum and many others, looking for trends in reported issues, and particularly following major releases. It seems you still have quite a lot to learn.

This forum is not for opinions. This forum is a user to user technical support forum. Everyone here (with the exception of the Hosts and the Community Specialists who are clearly identified) is a user just like you, and a volunteer. You probably need to familiarize yourself with the TOU of this forum, but this little snippet should help:

Submissions

  1. Stay on topic. Apple Support Communities is here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
    1. Speculations or rumors about unannounced products.
    2. Discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions.
  2. Be polite. Everyone should feel comfortable reading Submissions and participating in discussions. Apple will not tolerate flames or other inappropriate statements, material, or links. Most often, a "flame" is simply a statement that is taunting and thus arbitrarily inflammatory. However, this also includes those which are libelous, defamatory, indecent, harmful, harassing, intimidating, threatening, hateful, objectionable, discriminatory, abusive, vulgar, obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit, or offensive in a sexual, racial, cultural, or ethnic context.
  3. Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Constructive feedback about product features is welcome as well. If your Submission contains the phrase "I'm sorry for the rant, but…" you are likely in violation of this policy

And sorry, but the very fact that you are using CAPs for anything at all is still the equivalent of yelling.

Do you have Touch ID? If so, then you might want to consider going to Settings>General>Accessibility>Home Button, and turn on Rest Finger to Open. Then you only have to rest your Touch ID finger on the Home Button - you don't have to push it at all.

Gail, if you read the thread you'll see that the accessibility rest finger to open advice has already been offered *. It doesn't help because it has been negated by the design decision to make you also press the home button to unlock. We'll agree to disagree on the use of CAPS. It's not easy to use italics when replying on a phone - in fact the italics button in the rich text editor on Firefox isn't working either.

I'm also confused by not being allowed to have an opinion on a technical forum. If you remove all opinion, you simply create a question and answer list. Perhaps if that's what you want, it should be rebranded as such. I'm not convinced it's in any way constructive to ban people's opinions.

I've already provided feedback to Apple on this specific issue as it's a problem they have unnecessarily introduced (in my opinion) and could very easily be resolved by allowing you to turn both voice control features off completely.

* It was offered on one of the replies you have since removed

When the phone is on silent it still gives the loud double beep when this annoying voice control activation triggers without being wanted. Terrible design and apparently there is no way to fix it properly? What is the point of silent mode if its not silent? It is not really a surprise critical comments (which are not rude) about this problem are rounded on and deleted.

I have found a solution anyway, jailbreaking. That will allow me to actually switch off this voice control activation. At least then I will be allowed access to settings like an adult which Apple choose to deny me.

Before, with the latest updates, when I'd lift my iPhone se the lock screen display would come up (no buttons pushed yet), I'd rest my finger on the home button, unlocking it (the touch ID worked), but then I'd then get a message that said, "Press home to open". That's when I would actually have to press the home button .. Irritating.

But then I took the advice offered here, "Settings>General>Accessibility>Home Button, turn on Rest Finger to Open (default for this is off)", I turned it on.

Now when I raise my iPhone, I see the lock screen display, I rest my finger on the the home button and, even though I momentarily see "Press home to open", my iPhone does indeed open and i get full access to all my iPhone stuff.

Pretty much the same with my iPad Mini 4. As soon as I open the cover I see the lock screen along and then see the message "Press home to unlock". But now, having already done the Accessibility>Home button thing, all I have to do is rest my finger on the Home button and I get full access to all my iPad stuff.

Forgot to mention .. There's now, on that Accessibility>Home button page, a Click Speed adjustment option that allows one to select "Default", "Slow", or "Slowest". Being a rather old and slow guy, I've selected "Slow". Now, when I do press the Home button (for whatever reason) I no longer get Voice Control along with its irritating beeps unless I hold that button down for a reasonably long time. That wasn't the case before. Before, when I'd press the Home button for whatever reason, I'd usually have to deal with one of the voice irritants. That's not the case anymore. Thanks Apple!

This is incorrect. I have the Rest Finger to Open set on my iPhone, and all I have to do to unlock the device is to turn it on and leave my thumb on the Home key. I don't have to press or do anything else. When I turn it on, at the top of the Lock Screen there is a padlock in the middle. When I rest my touch id finger on the Home key, it immediately unlocks and opens the device.

You would have to take that up with the Moderators. We don't make the rules. I simply provided an excerpt from the TOU for the forum for you. We are all required to follow those Terms.
