Q: Contacts suggestions corrupted

When composing or forwarding an email, click in the address line and begin typing > a pop-up/drop-down appears with a list of suggested addresses.

- The list includes: ALL previous recipients / previous contacts / previous addressees.

- The list appears to include addresses that have never been used or stored on the actual device, but have been used or stored on other devices at some point, but are also no longer stored in any Apps.

Why do these appear when?

a) Settings> Contacts>Contacts Found In Apps... is set to OFF.

b) Settings>General>Spotlight Search... everything is set to OFF.

Where is it "pulling" this information from?

_____

The same thing happens in Messages App, although the entries in the pop-up/drop-down list differ.

- The suggested lists also includes current Contacts, but displays previous names, e.g.: contact now is called -  Ben. At some point previously the contact was labelled as  - Jimmys Mate. Jimmys Mate is what shows up!

As well as being extremely time consuming, scrolling through endless lists. This has the potential to spell disaster, Contacts information changes continually. I've no desire to see multiple email addresses or telephone numbers I may have used previously, but are no longer relevant.

...It would appear like Mail & Message APPs are additionally referencing against some old database. I noted on iOS 10 device there is some database referred to as RECENTS which is where some of the suggestions are being pulled from.

    Hi,

The Mail App has the "Previous Recipients" item in the Window Menu.

    Screen Shot 2016-09-15 at 20.54.42.png

It can be searched and will show ANY address that has been sent to you even if it was in Junk or a regular email.

Messages does store items from what was  a Recents List in the com.apple.ichat.plist although this is difficult to edit.

The actual Menu item is no longer there in Yosemite and higher.

This Recents List is the actual chats you have had.

The Mail like list is in the ~/Library/Messages database item that has the larger file size.

The file is somewhat readable in Text Edit and can them be searched (Find in Edit Menu) for the items involved.

I have yet to work out the criteria for items  that get included in this listings.

I have yet to try editing this file.
