This is a 2 year old, 15" machine with solid state drive. Recently, it's been heating up more than usual. It's not too hot to touch, but definitely hotter than it usually gets. It doesn't do it all the time, and I can't link the heat to any particular thing I'm doing or software I'm running.

Hmm, when it gets hot, open the app Activity Monitor and look at the CPU level to figure out what is the problem, there should be that 1 task using loads of power from your CPU like your printer drivers. Now, try to quit the process. If it doesn't comply, force quit the process. Hopefully the hot computer problem will be fixed for once and for all.
How hot is hot?
Install a temperature/fanspeed application.
Set Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and CPU to display values from high to low.
When the MBP gets 'hot', post images of both for review.
