iOS 10 battery drain / overheating

I Updated my iPhone 6 64gb to iOS 10 yesterday, today with normal low usage my battery (charged every night) has dropped from 100% to 38% in just over 1 hour I've also noticed that in use it is getting very hot something it never did under iOS 9, so apart from the positive of now having a winter pocket hand warmer it will be a useless phone after mid day I hope iOS 10.0.2 comes out quickly to address this issue, a very disappointed Mac user since Mac OS 8.5

I've been a fan of Apple for nearly over fifteen years, but no longer. I bought an iPhone 7 Plus and gave my iPhone 6 to my wife. It was working great until she installed iOS 10. Now the battery drains rapidly. When it gets to 32% it will suddenly claim it has no battery power left and shut down. When she plugs it in to charge it, the phone instantly goes back up to 30-40%. The phone is utterly useless. Apple only acknowledges this problem with the iPhone 6s, but it happens with the 6, too. Between this and the iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T) bluetooth/LTE interference problem, which Apple also refuses to acknowledge, I will never buy anything made by Apple again. They no longer support their products.

Decided to see if Apple's help was useful. Problem: iPhone 5 heating up and battery dying quickly even when not being used (started when I did an iOS10 update). Told to reset to factory because the update may have not completed properly; made no difference. They ran a test on the battery and was told my battery needed to be replaced (insert emoticon for "surprised"), will likely cost me $79. Decided not to follow up on this, why replace a battery when there is no acknowledgement of a possible link between iOS 10 update and overheating/drainage. If it weren't for the chorus of voices experiencing the same issue I could resign myself to, "It was just my bad luck" and drop the $79. Would the new battery not experience the same issue in short order? Apple support went silent. What are they running in the background that is so power hungry? Planning on using the money to get a Google Pixel and abandon the now not so innovative Apple. On a student budget so it will take a while to save up but dreams of achieving what we do not have are what drive us forward in life.

The phone is not damaged and aside from a poor battery it's been a reliable tool, a shame to waste it. Looked at phone cases with battery (Mophie seems to be the "go to brand") but limited cons and cost (Canadian) changed my mind. Now looking for a low cost external battery pack to have with me when away from a power source.

This was just a rant about losing what is now a necessity in our world. I am done now.

You touched a very import point "What are they running in the background that is so power hungry?" , iOS10 killed thousands or millions of batteries world wide, they aknowledged only the battery problem by the 6s and only for the ones manufactured until october 😟

It was not only the iOS itself, but the several Apps we have intalled in combination with the iOS did the effect ...

the reset of the network setting is important, it worked for me very well, I think it was related with my phone provider, the software used by them probably were not correctly updated during the iOS installation.

the next very important was the Apps from Facebook and respectivily their Messages. although they were setted to not running in the background, and also they were not running at all, they are consuming you iPhone resources. killing those 2 Apps gives a new life to your iPhone.

probably there are more Apps which should be killed, I did not found other so obvious as the Facebook and Messages.

LESSONS LEARNED:

when we buy such equipments, never upgrade the iOS to the next level. why not:

- Apple will never allow us to go back even if we want, then we will be stucked in the last version

- The equipment (iPhone, iPad, AWatch) we bought were developt together with their own iOS, the next iOS is developt for the new hardware, to push the new hardware to its limits, and for the old hardware will be adapt to just continuing running.

- never forget, these companies, they develop the equipment to be running for 2 years, then they are consider as replacable to the next generation.

I have a similar problem....having an iPhone 7 32 Gb and the battery draining from 90% to 25% overnight. I am updated to IOS 10.2. However this problem only happened recently, starting from 2 nights ago.

I would leave my phone under a pillow overnight, and find it in the morning after I wake up, overheated and almost drained of battery.

I do use the bedtime feature, however, I have used it ever since I got the iphone7 ( in mid December) without a problem.

I also don't want to replace my iPhone, because I just got a good quality glass protector(1week ago) and do not want to spend the time and money to buy another one if I replace the phone, when I have only used the glass protector for a week.

I hope Apple will figure out a solution to this problem..

Ok....the overheating and battery draining problem for my iPhone 7 is now solved.

I turned various things off such as:

•Notifications to apps I don't really use often

•Night shift

•Background apps

•Sounds in notifications to each app

•the bedtime thing in alarms

I also turned my phone to airplane mode and turned wifi and bluetooth off. Do not disturb is usually turned on for me, so I left it on.

Log into your Twitter account and go to Apple Support (https://twitter.com/AppleSupport) and Message them with your problem. If they don't respond in the first 24 hours Message them again and do so every 24 hours until they respond. They appear to be busy and "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". They will probably tell you first to do a factory reset so you may want to connect your iPhone to iTunes and be prepared to do that. If that does not fix your problem they will probably ask you to run a test on your iPhone and will provide the information. Good luck.

I will pass along the information I posted in another similar thread.

There is indeed an issue with all iOS 10 versions at this point still, and Apple customer care is finally beginning to admit this. They have admitted a coding error is being worked on and to watch for updates beyond 10.2.

I've done a good amount of research on LiPo batteries over the years (very similar to Lithium-Ion)

being an RC car racer among other hobbies. I believe what is happening is the OS is creating an extreme draw on the battery through some app corruption and those with marginal batteries hit a lower point of charge and the sudden voltage drop near the end takes the phone to shut off mode. My battery checks fine, and I never had the 30% shutdown, but I did have 10% per hour drain in standby mode while running nothing.

So, after people with marginally good batteries update, they kick in the high drain from corrupt iOS code and experience the shutdown, and those with decent batteries just notice a very short charge life and warm to hot phones. Now, that brings up an issue we all will have to watch for. Battery failure will now be more widespread since the #1 cause of battery failure is HEAT and rapid drain. My point is, keep an eye out for updates, and also watch for phone getting warm. Check Settings > Battery regularly and watch for offending apps causing high drain as the coding errors are still in our phones. I also recommend the free battery app called "Battery Life" (it is the green icon version as there are at least 2 with that name), and check your battery condition and temp on a regular basis to help reduce the chance of further failure. Also people need to keep in mind that the higher battery draining apps you run, the worse the extreme issues you will have with your battery charge life.

Thanks for the update. Is there a comment somewhere on Apple's site that shows they are working on a solution? I did a cursory search and found nothing. I am one of the people who has a battery that drains very quickly, even when I shut down all apps and limit myself to texting and listening to podcasts. Has this bug permanently damaged my battery so even when they work out the solution I am still left holding an iPhone that will last a max of a couple of hours or will this type of battery bounce back?

All I can say at this point is Customer Care has started to admit an issue exists to individual users, and I doubt Apple will officially list this anywhere until there is a known resolution (if at all). So, I'm just looking for progress myself at this point. The more demand and heat you put to your battery, the greater the chance of failure. That I can say for 100% certain. People running 3d games and GPS demanding apps will go through batteries much faster than others. Your batteries condition and what the end result will be after the software resolution I could not speculate on myself.

I had the same problem after the latest iOS update - I tried all the other advice on here but nothing worked until I switched the iCloud Keychain setting to OFF.

Go to Settings, click on the 'Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes & App Store' bar, go to iCloud and turn the Keychain off. Alternatively, go to Mail, choose your iCloud account and scroll down to find Keychain option and switch to off.

Presto. My battery was draining to flat within three hours. Now it is 6 hours later and I am still on 97%. Back to normal! My phone isn't running hot anymore either.

Hope this helps!

iOS 10.3.2 i6 now lasts half a day at best and gets very hot with 15mins plus use age. Previous build was fine even inside anker full case. Now I keep out of case to try and reduce the heat but doesn't make much difference. I wish apple would stop using us as test guinea pigs and release finished software. I used to look forward to updates now I don't install without waiting a few days and trawling google for issues first!

Interesting idea but my phone has always been iCloud disabled except for "Find My iPhone". However, I did find "Game Center" enabled for iCloud when I never play any games on my iPhone. ***.

FWIW, my iPhone 5s started getting hot and draining its battery extremely rapidly while it was on 10.3.2 - one time it went from 100% to 20% in 1 hour while it was not being used. I'm now on 10.3.3 and my phone was hot a few minutes ago and down to 74% from 100% after just 30 minutes or so.

I think it has to do with incompatibility with my apps.

Apple messages telling me my phone may "work slow" or to "upgrade software" when I try using my apps after iOS upgrades are not very helpful. Apple should warn users their phones may drain their batteries and get very hot if they upgrade and have older apps. There should be a way to scan the phone for incompatible apps - I know it's not difficult because I used to be a programmer. Apple can easily create an app to scan the executable files of older apps for executable code that indicate the apps will not run properly due to Apple code changes.
