iOS 10 battery drain / overheating

I Updated my iPhone 6 64gb to iOS 10 yesterday, today with normal low usage my battery (charged every night) has dropped from 100% to 38% in just over 1 hour I've also noticed that in use it is getting very hot something it never did under iOS 9, so apart from the positive of now having a winter pocket hand warmer it will be a useless phone after mid day I hope iOS 10.0.2 comes out quickly to address this issue, a very disappointed Mac user since Mac OS 8.5

This article is NOT helpful. I have already tried all of your suggestions to no avail. I am using this phone in exactly the same way as I did prior to the update and have now turned off background updates, etc. I've done a hard reboot and tried every suggestion I can find in this forum and in other articles on line. Low Power Mode is the ONLY thing that resolves the issue in my phone. I am seriously re-thinking my decision to get an iPhone7 next month.

Hi all,

I'd like to join the discussion since I've the same issue on my 6s Plus: this morning my iPhone passed from 100% to 50% with only a couple of hours of usage. Never happened with iOS 9.3.5 ...

I installed iOS 10 from scratch, by setting the device as "new iPhone" and without restoring any backup.

Even if I did it 4 days ago, the battery drain problem still exists. In my opinion it's not a matter of indexing contents ... not after 4 days with an empty device at least.

I also reduced as much as possible all the services (backgroud updates, unused GPS services, etc) but nothing... next step I'll completely switch off the phone to keep the battery alive ...

Jokes apart, based on my experience, my suggestion is to not waste time by resetting and installing again the iphone because this won't fix.

Mother Apple, please help us !

It's unfortunate that the basic troubleshooting didn't resolve your issue. But your advice not to bother is still bad. That doesn't change the fact that it will help most people and, without trying, you won't know it it will or it won't. The other problem with your advice is that Apple is not reading here. If you want Apple to help you, you'll need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or call them directly. And, guess what? They will do the basic troubleshooting first.

Apple, despite your apparently quasi-religions invocations, is not going to magically fix an issue that probably has almost as many causes as there are people with the symptom.

Hello everyone,

I upgraded my iPhone 5s to IOS 10 a week ago. After that it happened three times, that my phone's battery was totally empty in the morning, even though it had been at least 50% full in the evening. With my usual usage, I have had to charge my phone not more often than after 2-3 days (except after heavy usage, of course). So, exactly the same symptoms than many others seem to have here.

I was already prepared to go back to IOS 9. BUT: Then I checked two things, that were the solution at least in my case: The widgets, and the app updates. I have not used many widgets (just the calendar reminders, actually), and the app updates have earlier been adjusted so, that they updated automatically only when the phone was connected to WiFi. But now the IOS 10 upgrade had turned the app update to be on even when using mobile data (i.e. 3g or 4g). There seems actually now not being a choice, whether to use only WiFi for automatic app updates. The latest IOS 9 version still had this difference. Also there came unwanted widgets with the IOS upgrade, and they were active by default.

I disabled the automatic update of the apps, and I removed the unnecessary widgets. After that my phone's behaviour was back to normal - no more surprise drainage of the battery. And I did not have to return to IOS 9, after all.

I hope this could help at least some of you!

This is basically a "me too" response to add to the thread. Installed the OS 10 update through iTunes on Tuesday. Upgraded my iPhone 5s. Immediately noticed my phone get VERY HOT when plugged in. Stays HOT when unplugged and in use. Battery drains like crazy, goes from 100% to 90% in 10 minutes. In an hour I'm nearly fully drained, sitting between 5-10% with moderate usage -- reading email, texting, reading news, changing settings, contacts, calendar, surfing a couple Web pages etc. (You know, the things you do every day with your phone!)

The phone used to go for hours on a single charge, 100% unplugging in the morning at 7am to about 50% at 5pm. Mostly light usage during the day, but lost of checking emails, texts, etc.

After I installed 10 and noticed the heat and batter drain, I immediately turned off automatic updates of apps. Turned off all background app refresh. Turned off 95% of app notifications. Turned down the brightness to 25%, turned off auto brightness. Turned off push notification in email. No change in battery drain.

I have since tried recharging the battery while it was off and using the on/off button + home button reset. No improvement there. Have tried removing all widgets, no improvement in battery drain either.

I am not using moving wallpapers. Siri is turned off. All iCloud backup features turned off. Turned off share my location. Turned off 90% of location services. Turned off searching for WiFi networks. I have basically turned off most features I can think of that might affect background battery power.

I turned off nearly all new features and many typical smartphone features that I used to have on all the time, and still the battery drains like running water. And the phone gets VERY hot. This never happened before 10.

I am thinking about reverting to my backup in iTunes.

What a pain this has been.

I think my issue may be resolved.

I have an iPhone 6 (Verizon) and after a lot of investigation I realized I was seeing the issue when I was at work, Wi-Fi off, cellular only.

Last night I reset my phone through iTunes and restored to the last backup with IOS 10.0.1. When the phone was resetting, I got a message stating there was a cellular service update and I installed that as well. I think this may be the key to my problem.

I charged my phone overnight and have been using it off and on all morning as I always do without any problems. No overheating and the battery drain is reasonable. I am no longer using it in low power mode.

Hope this helps some of you.

as I said before, I did a Network reset, only Network and at the "same" time came out the 10.1 Public Beta version and I gave it a shoot and installed it.

So I can say it is back to normal, after 24h I still have 29%, which should be good at least to 2-3 hours more. according the Battery (Configurations) I used the iPhone more than 4 hours 🙂 I can say the power performance got 100% better.User uploaded file

I updated my iphone 6 plus last week to iOS 10 and today is the first skype video call I made after update and may be after 15min in call, I got a Temperature warning and I could feel my phone heating up. Warning screenshot is attached with this post. I turned my phone off and put it away to cool down and restarted it to only find my display is burnt.

I spoke with apple care and they asked me to get it down to the apple centre so a technician can have a look. Very disappinted as this never happened with iOS 9. Hoping that can trace out the cause.User uploaded file

I just installed iOS 10.0.2 OTA and also have serious heat below the cam on my iPhone 6. Seems like using the facebook app has something to do with the overheating. FB gets crazy slow with graphics/scrolling and textblock inputs. Not ready for primetime (again) Apple! Boy am I glad I took a wait and see approach on the iPhone 7. Now I'm reading reports of all kinds of iPhone 7 issues. It's finally time to look at Android

devices...

I pay a lot for my iphones. I have the 6plus and it's barely a year old. I never had battery or overheating problems until IOS 10. This means that Apple has effected my business because it's how I run my salon suite both iPhone and iPad Air 2. So when are we going to come together and make them be responsible for this terrible system? It's not our new, barely 1 year old phones. I'm tired of being lied to and told it's because I didn't turn off apps. THE IPHONE RUNS ON APPS. The apps should not be the problem. Apple is the problem. Fix it now.
