Q: iPad stopped charging through keyboard USB after ios 10 update

Howdy,

Updated my mobile devices to iOS 10 yesterday and the only weird thing I've noticed so far is that my iPad Pro 9.7" no longer charges through the USB port on my Apple keyboard. It will charge if I plug it directly in to the back of my computer.

Restarted both devices, same issue.

Obviously, this isn't life or death and merely an annoyance, but I thought I'd post to see if anyone else has run into the same issue.

I'm using a 27", Late 2012 iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 (14F1912).

iPad Pro, iOS 10, 9.7"

I've seen other people reporting similar issues. It's possible that 10 changed the minimum acceptible input power level for the iPad.

Honestly, as someone that's had one for years, charging ipads via USB are problamatic at best. Most iPads want at least 10W of power and, unless it's a high powered USB, they only put out 5. Which can work for a phone or ipod but not an iPad.

Even though it says not charging it's possible your ipad is still getting a trickle charge, but I think using another port is the best solution for you - beyond using the supplied power adapter and charging it from the wall. That's how I charge mine. I've used USB charging as a 'oh fudge, I need power and have nothing to use' kind of thing. (Aka last resort)

Thanks for the thoughtful response and, agreed... a wall wart would be ideal.

Power receptacles are at a premium at work, however, so USB ports are definitely the most practical and convenient option for me right now.

Like I said, not life and death and I do have a free USB port available on the back of my computer... I guess I just don't understand why the keyboard USB port would provide different wattage than the USB ports on the back of the computer.

That seems odd to me, but stranger things have happened,

    Thanks again...

You're welcome. I think it has to do with the port itself. I know I'd long ago noticed if I plugged a USB drive into the keyboard, I could only plug in ones so big before they wouldn't run....perhaps the USB the keyboard is plugged into only puts out so much power, and with the keyboard itself using part of it, there's only so much left over for other things. Anymore i only use those ports for the wireless mouse receivers.
