Phone number formats changed after ios 10 update, now no message link

After updating my iPhone 6s plus to ios 10, I have discovered that the formatting of the phone numbers in my contacts app have been changed from "+1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx" to "xxxxxxxxxx". This has the annoying side effect of causing iMessage to not understand when someone in my contacts sends me a text message. Instead of seeing the name and picture of the person texting me, I get their phone number and no picture.

Is anyone else having this problem? Have you been able to fix it? Please let me know.
