Q: “iMac” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.
I frequently access my iMac from my MacBook Pro using file sharing and work on files stored on the iMac from the MacBook Pro.
Recently updated both machines to OS X 10.11.6. iMac upgrade was very smooth. MacBook Pro got hung up but was resolved by starting in Safe Mode. (don't know if this has anything to do with my current issue)
Recently (perhaps since the last security update - but I won't swear to that) when I try to access the iMac from the MacBookPro Finder the following window pops up.
"“iMac” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."
The iMac (obviously ) shows in the Finder window under Devices.
I have been able to "force it" to 'share' by going into System Preference → Sharing - on both computers. The weird thing is all the correct boxes are checked. File sharing -for both the Administrator's Folders and the HD - and both Administrator and Administrators have Read and Write permissions. Both SMB and AFP are checked. (The first time I had this issue only SMB was checked on the iMac. Checking AFP in addition to SMB seemed to resolve the issue <that day>).
I checked the community questions and one suggestion was to run Disk Utility →First Aid and to check permissions. My Disk Utility only has the option to 'run First Aid'. Which I did for both machines. The MacBook Pro was fine. The iMac's last three lines were:
"The volume Macintosh HD was found to be corrupt & needs to be repaired.
File system check exit code is 8.
Operation successful."
I have no idea if this is relevant.
Any suggestions/help is really appreciated.
