iOS 10 - Show only downloaded music

Hi all, It appears that the Music app forces us to display our iTunes purchases. I do not like this and only want my downloaded music to appear on the device.

I'm not ok with tapping the >Downloaded tab every time I open the app. There must be a solution, so how do I fix this?

I would not have updated had I known this feature would be so strongly imposed. Thanks for your help.

After reading the last 5 pages the best solution I've come across is this Picky app.

It just officially replaced the music app for me.

I spent about an hour on the online chat support and even the apple tech couldn't solve the problem (and then reading over this forum I'd like rephrase to " was reluctant to admit that this was permanently built into the app and apple is just pretending like it isn't a huge issue for their customers"). I agree with everything that has been said: too clunky, waste of data, feels backwards, music I don't like shuffling though with everything else, etc.

Finally at the end of the thread: a solution! Ditch the Music app all together. Thought I'd check out Picky and after the amount of time I'd invested into this tonight $4 seemed worth it. Downloaded it, opened it and there it was! All the music I'd specifically choosen for my phone, in a clear interface that reminded me how easy it USED to be. I literally did nothing. It automatically knew what had been put on my device.

Sorry apple. This is a consumer society, and I vote with which products I use, your music app has been bumped from my dock.

I have exactly the same issue. I cannot restrict my phone to only show downloaded music anymore.

Let me explain - imagine that you purchased some music in the past (including something explicit rap, etc). Now imagine that you are plugging your phone in your car, driving your little kid, and first thing she hears is this. All the suggestions to only enable the "Downloaded music" does not work, because most of the car apps that link to iPhone won't care about this, they will still display all you purchased. So this does not work. Trying to go to Settings - Music and turn off Show Apple Music does not work either. The most frustrating thing is that it forces you to stream. Even if you turn of Settings - Cellular data, it will turn off the library update and artwork over cellular, but will stream all your library, consuming your data. This is extremely frustrating, and probably a class - action suit worthy.

Apple, please fix this, it is very, very frustrating.

Just got a new iPhone 7, and at first glance, was glad the Music app had been overhauled -- looked more similar to the simple and functional layout of old iPods. Went to "Songs," hit "Shuffle all," and was confused when the app kept stopping -- every time it came to a song I'd apparently bought in the past that wasn't loaded onto the phone. >:( So much for improvement.

So I sent "official" feedback and then went straight to iTunes to buy the Picky app. Thanks for the suggestion! So far it's working great. I had tried Ecoute before but it seemed buggy and no easier to navigate.

Same here. The whole purpose of being able to connect your iPhone to your car and control what songs are played through your car's stereo is to help prevent distracted driving. Now when I connect my iPhone to the car, it shows my whole ******* library. I went over my data limit 2 months before I realized what was happening.

Apple--plain and simple--if it's not on my phone, I don't want to see it in my car.

I agree. I don't want to subscribe to a music service, I don't want to stream any music. I want to play what I own that I've personally ripped as lossless that I've transferred to my iPhone.

This isn't the issue being discussed. If you connect your phone to your car's stereo system, you used to only see the songs that were 'physically' on your iPhone. Now when you connect to your car, it shows you everything in your library regardless if it's on the device or not. This has lead to some people--like myself-- from going over their data limits because it starts to stream your songs if they're not on your device. You can turn off the ability to stream music through cellular service but you still your whole collection. So you can choose a song to play but then nothing happens because it's not on the device.

So a feature that was to help a driver keep focused on the road has gone away. Now to only play what's on an iPhone, the driver has to look at the iPhone to choose songs/playlists.

There is a workaround but it involves disconnecting from all of Apple's/iCloud's other services. So if you only want to see the music downloaded to the iPhone, you can't have your Notes, Calendar, Contacts, and other things be shared between your Mac and your iPhone.

This thread began discussing the iOS music app's unacceptable mandatory push of all downloaded music to the iphone, irrespective of whatever one tries to see only actual physically downloaded music into the phone. Do you know if the Picky app is recognized by GM or other automobile brands? I'd like to try the app, but don't see any reason if the car maker's interface still seeks the native music app to play music in the vehicle. Thanks in advance if you know...

You are recommending he do exactly what he, and others including myself think is unnecessary; in iOS 10 you now have to open: Music>Downloaded>Artist>Choose Artist>Album>Song. That's way too many steps just to play a track. The old default to Artists was much more useful, and probably the way people would search for a Song. I am not a fan of Apple Music, and have no intention of using it, so if I disable that from the menu, why would I still want to see Songs that aren't on my device?? FAIL

I have this same issue. There are ton of tracks that are in my iTunes library that I can't stand and do not want on my phone (stuff that my wife downloaded on my account, free samplers with songs I don't like). I shouldnt have to delete each song individually. The biggest issue that I have is when I connect my phone to my car via USB, the car shows all of the songs in the iTunes library, not just what is on my phone, regardless of whether my phone is set to display only downloaded music. this is very frustrating.
