Q: Can Pages 5 import Pages 2 documents?

My iBook G4 died last week. I was using iWork '06, which has Pages 2, so I am wondering if I can just import my Pages documents with the current Pages app or if I will have to use TextEdit and do a lot of copying and pasting. Except for a few documents that use tables there is nothing complicated about them.

Why can't you just reinstall iWork '06? If you don't have the original CD/DVD, check eBay or Amazon for a copy.

Also, try LibreOffice. I don't know if it can open Pages documents but it can open many old AppleWorks documents, so it's worth a try since it's free.

The current version of Pages, Pages 5, is supposed to be able to open Pages 3 & 4 documents, but Pages 2 is not listed. The current version requires at least Mavericks, OS X 10.9.

Pages v5.6 or later supports opening Pages '06 (v2.0.1+) documents. This version of Pages v5 will require at minimum, OS X 10.10.4 installed.

I don't have a Pages '06 document here to test, but Pages '09 v4.3 will open a Pages '08 v3.0.2 document with complex layout, that I do have. It may also open Pages '06 documents.

The latest LibreOffice requires at least OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion), and at present, only opens Pages '09 v4+ single-file format documents. It has no support for Pages package folder documents, or older Pages '06, or '08 documents. It also is still very limited to simple documents (e.g. text, or text with images, but no multi-column support).

I have never had a problem opening Pages 1, 2 or 3 with Pages 4. Installing iWork '09 is probably the best choice. It also may be possible to find a download of an older version of LibreOffice, but I'm not sure where.

iWork '09 works very well on my G4 iMac running Tiger, OS X 10.4.11, the OS the OP's signature says he has.

Ok. Agreed on installing Pages '09 from iWork '09 DVD. Better than the Pages v5 plague.

Here is a list of archived LibreOffice downloads, but Pages '09 v4 support only was added after v4.3+ (I believe). No  release notes to accompany these downloads for additional platform information or restrictions.

I did not think to check the system requirements, but after looking at them it appears to be a universal application. When my Mac mini comes in tomorrow I will first try to import my documents and if that does not work then I will install iWork '06. Hopefully, I will be able to export them as MS Word files so I can then import them into Pages 5.

Going from Mac OS X "Tiger" to macOS Sierra is going to be an experience. While I am at it, I might as well retire my 20GB 3G iPod and get an iPod nano.

You really should install Pages '09 v4.3.

Pages 5 is a buggy, unreliable dog.
