iTunes 12.5.1 not downloading on Windows

Hello,

I open iTunes, click "Help", click on "Check for Updates" and a prompt appears saying iTunes 12.5.1 is available for download. I click download and nothing happens. iTunes freezes for a second before saying "Accessing iTunes Store" then it goes back to normal. Tried this multiple times now and i can't get iTunes 12.5.1 to start downloading.

Try the following in turn until iTunes opens normally:

  • Locate the shortcut for iTunes, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator. Doing this once may fix certain launch issues.
  • Try holding ctrl+shift as you launch iTunes so it opens in safe-mode. Again doing this once may sometimes help.
  • Delete the iTunes shortcuts from the start menu, desktop, task bar, or similar, then repair iTunes from the programs and features control panel.
  • Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support and test the behaviour in a different user profile or with a different library. If the problem only exists in your profile it may be possible delete some of the iTunes preference files which it would seem that iTunes may be choking on.
  • Finally see the second box in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for detailed tear down and rebuild advice.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right-click the downloaded setup file and use Run as administrator.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

It sounds as if you're possibly suffering from this issue but without the error message. Try the suggested fix.

If you see the error message: "The Apple Software Update server could not be found. Check your Internet settings and try again." open Control Panel > Network and Sharing > Internet Options > Advanced > Security and uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk".

Otherwise see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for further advice. The Further information

area has direct links to the iTunes for Windows installers.

🙂 I see why you list as Level 10 - you scored direct hit on my checked box in IE advanced settings,

to uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk". I have read articles for hours and tried at least 20 times to get the update to start for 12.5.1. Somehow I had not noticed I wasn't getting update notices to update iTunes, at all for quite awhile. I could not upgrade my phone via iTunes, until I managed to upgrade the iTunes application. I used the phone alone, for that update, but then started with the 12.5.1 download... Thanks for your interest and posting. I'm back in business here.🙂
