Hard Drive Issue

I have a MacBook Air new in 2013. Running disk utilities, I came across diskOs4. This showed an error message saying the disk had to be repaired. Trying to repair I get the message that disk utility cannot repair it and I need to back up as many files, reformat the disk and restore the backed up files.

I have subsequently found out that this is part of the Apple SSD Controller. Is it safe to erase this? How would I save files? How would I reformat this?

You save files by having a backup. Two widely used methods are Apple's Time Machine, which comes with the OS and/or a clone. Two backups are better that one. You'd reformat it by booting into the Recovery Partition and using Disk Utility/Erase. As to whether or not it is safe, I'll let someone else answer that. I have never seen anything like that.
