Sep 15, 2016 1:20 PM in response to Eric Rootby UCSD Pascal,This process was helpful in that I learned a bit more about the code used in the OS 10.8.5 Terminal. Since the code supresses sound at startup and continues at that level thereafter, this was not the fix I was hoping to find.
Again, APPLE has failed us faithful MAC users in not supply a simple on/off choice for startup sound.

Sep 15, 2016 1:22 PM in response to UCSD Pascalby Eric Root,Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

Sep 15, 2016 4:53 PM in response to UCSD Pascalby BobHarris,I have different values in my nvram command than you have shown.
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00
And I am positive that $80 will become
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=0
which is not the same thing at all. I do not know where you got your instructions, but I think they are wrong.
You might try reading this article

as it seems to indicate that different systems require different values. In some cases it is %80, but NEVER $.
