How to play podcast from iPod using Echo?

I'd like to control playing of podcast using voice. You can tell siri to play if the iPod is plugged in. But you can't tell siri to pause if something is playing. That's very limiting.

The Amazon Echo seems like it might be a solution. Has anyone been able to control podcast on their iPod using the Echo?

If not, I guess just using the Echo by itself is the way to go (although I loose iTunes).
