Ios10 messages app background activity

H after upgrading to ios10 I have been getting really poor battery life. getting really poor battery life. It seems to relate to the background activity of the messaging app as below. I barely use the messaging app ( most of the usage is me checking it). This is in an iPhone SE that previously had great battery life.

I can't disable the background activity as it's a built in app? What do I do to resolve this?
