Can you please advise what is the best and most OSX native way to schedule an Automator workflow or application?

I think you're asking how to run an Automator workflow under certain conditions ...

Create a Calendar Alarm in Automator and it will create an event on a special calendar it creates. You can then modify that event to whatever schedule you need.
