watchOS 3 release?
I thought watchOS 3 was to be released on 13 Sep 16, so I checked today, 15 Sep 16, and was told that I am up to date with version 2.2.2.
Is watchOS 3 just for the new Watch 2 and those of us with Watch 1 are s o l?

Hi
watchOS 3 was released on 13 September and is available for all Apple Watch models.
If you have not yet done so, first update your iPhone to the latest software, then try pairing again:
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
So watchOS 3 will ONLY work with iOS 10? That is NOT mentioned in the requirements that I can find. Could you please post a link to APPLE documentation stating that iOS 10 is required to update an Watch to watchOS 3? Thank you.
Hi,
Yes.
Set up your Apple Watch - Apple Support
Before you begin
To set up your Apple Watch, you need an iPhone 5 or later and the latest version of iOS.
Well, first, my Watch is ALREADY setup and has been for 11 months. Second, when I went to "update" my iPhone 6 to iOS 10, Apple told me that I ALREADY have the most recent version of iOS: 9.3.5! Sounds like Apple's servers are STILL a little confused! 😁
If you have beta profiles installed on either or both devices, delete them, restart both devices and then update your iPhone first:
Nope, not on any. I'm going to check again later today to see if Apple's servers have their act together and say I can install iOS 10 on my iPhone 6, or if they still insist that the iOS 9.3.5 currently on the iPhone 6 is the most recent. Of course if they DO say I can get iOS 10, then I have to decide if I want to do so at the risk of it bricking the phone. I may hold off until 10.1 to give Apple a chance to fix the bricking problem.
Well, I just checked again today, 19 Sep 16, and iTunes is STILL telling me that iOS 9.3.5 is the most recent for my iPhone 6.
Try checking directly on your iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update.
Be sure to make a backup before proceeding to update your iPhone.
I will, but I want to update via iTunes due to the following:
1) the "bricking" problem seems to be only with wireless updating
2) the size of iOS 10 means it is better to download the update to iTunes, then update the phone later
3) by updating via iTunes, I'll have a copy of the update stored on my hard drive (that is needed if you want to go back to a previous iOS version)
OK, my iPhone 6 says there is an update; now how do I get iTunes to download it?
I started a separate thread as this is no longer about watch OS 3.
The over-the-air update "bricking" problem was resolved very soon after iOS 10 first became available (the current version is iOS 10.0.1).
Check that iTunes is up to date. The latest update included support for iOS 10:
But will iTunes 12.5 run on MacOS 10.8.5?
Well, I went to iTunes and told it to check for an update, was told 12.5.1 was available. Told it to download but it just went to the Mac App Store and iTunes was not there even under the incompatible applications section.
iTunes 12.5.1 is available for Macs running 10.9.5 or later.
I suggest that you make a backup via iTunes and update your iPhone over the air.
OK, just to make certain I understand correctly:
1. watchOS 3 REQUIRES iOS 10
2. iOS 10 REQUIRES iTunes 12.5.1
3. iTunes 12.5.1 REQUIRES Mac OS 10.9.5
4. Apple will not allow Mac OS 10.9.5 to be downloaded
5. Thus I have to get Mac OS 10.11
