Q: iTunes update to 12.5.1 - "Error getting file security: C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\ GetLastError: 5"

Currently having this error pop up everytime I go to install the newest version of iTunes. I have tried to do a uninstall on iTunes and received the same error.

I will post the error here in the summary for reference:

"Error getting file security: C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\ GetLastError: 5"

I have also attempted to do a repair on iTunes as well and have received this error:

"An error occurred while attempting to create the directory: C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info"

I am currently running the latest version of Windows 10 and the version of iTunes I have installed right now is 12.4.2.4.

As of right now, I am still able to access iTunes for my music and the store front. I am not able to update it to the latest version.

iPod touch, iOS 5.1.1

Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support.

Does the behavior persist in iTunes' own safe mode, or if you right-click the iTunes icon and use run as administrator, or in a different user profile?

While the link you have posted is helpful, it doesn't exactly fix the underlying issue with iTunes not being able to update. I just ran the Apple Software Update tool through iTunes in safe mode and have received the same error.

I have also attempted to uninstall and repair iTunes with the error I have listed in the original post.

Try the full tear down and rebuild in the second box of the troubleshooting tip. Run the installer as the administrator. This should correct those security permissions as it installs. If you still get that error remove the SC Info folder.

I did the majority of the tear down process that was listed but I run into the original error when trying to uninstall iTunes (as in the "GetLastError: 5" error). From what I can tell, there is no "Apple Computer" folder that was ever created nor that I can see when trying to do the uninstall.

For that matter, I am unable to see the "SC Info" folder since I am unable to see the "Apple Computer" folder in the C drive, under the regular Program Files folder. I have "Hidden items" checked off, as well.

See the notes below the second box. The Microsoft fix it might help. Alternatively try making the folder path C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info so the installer has something to work with.

I have followed the guide you and the second box you have stated. At first, I was receiving the same exact errors as before, only now the "SC Info" error returns when attempting to install a new copy of iTunes.

After doing some investigation in my C drive, I have found that the error that was being caused due to the folder already existing in the hidden folder "ProgramData" at the C drive root folder. I have mistakenly gone through the "ProgramFiles" thinking that the issue was present there.

After deleting the "Apple Computer" folder that was within the "ProgramData" hidden folder, I attempted the install of iTunes and successfully installed the newest version of iTunes. I am going to say that the installer was trying to create a folder in which already exists and that was the cause of the installation/update issue.

The guide provided did help, but required a little more awareness on my part in order to pinpoint the cause. Hopefully, this will help future issues that others may have if they run into this problem or something similar.

I think I may have found the cause of this error that you may have as well. I posted my findings and solution at the bottom of this thread if you are still having issues.
