Over Capacity Error with iTunes 12.5.1.21

I get all the error messages that my iPhone 6s is over capacity and will not sync, but it looks like I'm still able to backup the phone. I'm not willing to test the veracity of said backup though.

I've restarted iTunes 3 times, I've done a hard reboot of my phone twice. This only started happening with iTunes 12.5.1.21. I did not encounter the problem when I backed up my iPad Air2.

I then updated the iPhone's iOS to 10.0.1 and still received the same error. The number of gigs in the overage fluctuates as well. According to my iPhone 6s, I have 29.21 GB of space remaining on my phone.

please try this and see:-

iTunes needs to "recalculate capacity"

  1. Connect the iPad, iPod, or iPhone to a computer
  2. Launch iTunes
  3. Hold the Power and Home button until the device forcibly reboots
  4. Relaunch iTunes

otherwise:-

  • Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
  • Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
  • Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
  • Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
  • Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:

Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.

Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.

Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.

    -

Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and re-sync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 6.

  • Restore using iTunes.
