software downloads failing recently

I have an i-mac (mid 2011 version) with OS.11.6 and recently it will not complete software downloads. I did an online chat with a mac tech person and was advised to download the combo update but that would not download either. It was to be installed on the hard rive and a warning came up that the disc cannot be changed. What in the world is that all about and do you have any ideas to help me?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Try to boot in Safe Mode once, then normal boot could solve then problem.

Thanks for the tip las-k... but I did try that to no avail. I'll try again, however, to see if the combo update will download to see if that fixes it. But so far no luck with any software downloads. I'm wondering with the new OS coming out if that will fix it? I am perplexed. Any help would be most appreciated!
