Q: Itunes isn't updating

So, I have been having issues with my iTunes lately. I mean it works but it's not letting me manually do things on my iPhone through it because it needs to be,"used because it requires a newer version of iTunes," and I checked for updates! But it tells me that Itunes is up to date. I don't know what to do. I have lots of music and such saved on the Itunes on my Mac. But, when I got my new phone (an iPhone 6) I couldn't get the music back. Couldn't even access iTunes because of the issue I am mentioning.

Any ideas how to fix this?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
