Star rating in music app in iOS 10 is gone?

Hi,

Star rating of songs in music app in iOS 10 in my iPhone 6s is gone, :-(

My music library with thousands songs sorted in rated playlists is useless now (and my iPhone too), :-(

I have red tips about rating using Siri, but you cannot do it sitting on the bus or train,..

Somebody who knows why apple has removed rating feature in music app, and if they will put it back?

Best Regeards,

Same here. Using star ratings since the beginning. Apple needs to bring it back. Years of effort went into my play lists and I need it back. I went to re rate a song yesterday while siting in an airplane and couldn't. How that song got the rating it had yesterday could only be from the other boneheaded Apple feature of auto rating songs (Great artists also make horrible songs). I'm guessing Apple doesn't read these comments and doesn't care. If Apple is reading this please put star ratings back. If Apple isn't reading this, well, we tried to help - enjoy spiralling into oblivion. Wow! I can't even scroll up to proofread what I wrote.

iPod touch 5th gen and prior users can not get the ios10 update. this is ridiculous.

THERE IS A WORKAROUND

Create new playlists on your ipod title the for example 01 star, 02 star, etc... this will put them at the top of your lists (easier to find). then you can add to playlist from the song that is playing. then rate them from your computer after you sync. it is a hassle yes, but there is still a way to 'rate' them. Interesting, it never gave me 10 at all. Not saying you don't have it, but mine was incompatible and everything 5th gen is stated as incompatible. I use my iPhone most of the time anyway now so I don't need the workaround, thank goodness.

Another workaround you can try is to use Siri. For example, while a song is playing, open Siri and say, "Rate this song four stars". It works, but it also can be inconvenient and not always ideal depending if you are on a train, for example.

yea sorry if my first response was abrupt, but you have just hit on several sore subjects. I have a touch. I do not need voice assistance. There is NO way to deactivate siri w/o root? She won't obey any commands. I am always on airplane mode, I only use the touch for music. Yet somehow, with the slightest soft pressure / brush up against of the home button siri goes crazy trying to recognize a command, and will not stop until she detects something - even in dead silence (and still manages to play a song without input).

PC updates automatically and If I don't update my ipod, I can't sync so updates are forced on me. Apple has stolen the product that I purchased. I loved the product I had for years - and now am beside myself trying to use this thing (only for music!) and I would not have bought this item. Why did it work better before the 'enhancements'... It's 'nice' to see Android is following suit with the Google Assistant. Why is it the 'more advanced' these things get, the harder it is for me to try to do the simplest things...

There are no settings accessible for Siri. Under settings, I search "siri" it returns a settings>Siri result but when i click on it, I am not redirected to any settings options, just stays at the same settings menu. I have searched every option in settings, I have turned everything 'off' for "smart" options and online stuff. I again tested my home button - asked to 'turn off voice control" (returned: playing songs by blue oyster cult...) From my searches, I have to enable a passcode to disable any lock screen voice control options. Which makes this even more of a pain to use as a simple audio player. I just want to play music (and have 120+ GB mp3). Why is this such an ordeal?! I will probably be selling this device before it gets any worse... Thanks for ruining a good thing A%#le.

And Apple has managed to break it again. In iOS 10.3, if I rate a song that's playing the music player becomes unresponsive and has to be killed. Maybe others are luckier and it works. I am using smart playlists that take star rating into account. I am also not sure it's related to having Apple Music enabled or not. I have it enabled (trial).

I start to wonder the existing Apple management team needs some changes - it is like repeating the history during 1990.

Lately the things we need they take it away like the rating, the things we don't need, they keep adding... come on bring back the rating... love and dislike is not adequate....this world is not entirely black or white....

And seriously if iPhone 8 has a Samsung curved, seriously this maybe the first iPhone I am not upgrading...to...

I have iOS 10.3 on both an iPad and and iPhone 7. Checked this on both devices (with Apple Music enabled - subscription) and I don't have this issue on either device.

I checked using a Playlist I have specifically built to only have songs that I have not yet rated. When playing the song, I rate the song and it stops playing, drops out of the playlist (as expected as the playlist only has songs w/o a rating) and the next song in the playlist begins to play.

Hmm, I checked again today - and now it is indeed working. Hopefully it will stay that way ..

@fewpix: On a different, but related topic that you brought up. Before I joined Apple Music my Smart playlists behaved much better because they were not Live. With Apple Music I am unable to disable Live updates to my smart playlists. Unchecking ("Live Updates") in iTunes does not work. Smart playlists are always live.

The problem I have with Live updates is just like you described. I also have smart playlists for my unrated music. If I rate a song, it immediately stops playing and disappears from the playlist. If I press the wrong star button, there is no way to go back and correct it unless I remember the exact name of the song to search for it manually.

I have the same problem for my other smart playlists that usually include "not played within the last <n> weeks". If I decide I want to re-rate a song that just played, or want to see what just played if I cannot recall the artist, once the song has played it has disappeared from the playlist, and one cannot go back in history. If you happen to know if it's possible to go back to the most recent song in this scenario, please share...

Completely off topic, the other problem I have with smart playlists in Apple Music is that they cannot be based on other playlists. These playlists can be created in iTunes on the computer, but are never available on my phone (crossed out cloud in iTunes even if all the songs are in the cloud). Example: I have a Favorites playlist (not smart). Then I want to create Smart Favorites -> song is in my Favorites, has 4 or better rating, and not played within the last <n> weeks. I was able to get around this by adding a specific keyword in the Comments field and use this as a criteria, but that won't work if I have other comments I want to keep, and it's hard to maintain as I change my Favorites playlist.

I do agree with the "live" aspect of Apple Music. There are some pros and cons, but the one issue you outlined is one of the cons. The only way I've found around this is to create yet another Smart Playlist entitled Recently Played and the criteria is something played in the last 3 days. Now there is still a concern with this as sometimes, even though it has a "live" aspect on my iPhone, it may take a few hours or more for that to update as Played in iTunes and reflect in the playlist. But at least it does allow me to see the songs I've played lately for the types of reasons you mention above.

On the pro side, I do like how it automatically drops the song out of the Playlist. In the past, I'd have to sync my phone before it dropped out and thus some of those songs still existed in the Playlist, even though I had played them in the last few days.

I also agree with the smartlist based on smartlist. I had to rework some of my Playlist to workaround this issue as I could no longer use another Playlist as a criteria for another Playlist. But no solution was a perfect workaround.
