Syncing Facebook for Contact Photos

Since I updated to iOS 10, every Messages conversation displays the contact's photo. Ideally, I would like to switch that back to simply displaying their name; the photo and name together are too cluttered. But I have not found a solution to that problem as it seems to be part of iOS 10 that cannot be altered.

Since I am stuck with contact photos in my messages, I would like to actually add photos to my contacts now. I have Facebook synced with my contacts, however it is not actually changing any contact photos. Under my contacts there is now a link to their Facebook profile, so I know it is correctly detecting the contact and Facebook account; however, the contact photos are unchanged. How can I import Facebook profile pictures into my contacts, as the settings suggest I can?

iPhone SE, iOS 10

Hello anderscarey7,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that you would like to know if you can turn off the photo feature that is now showing at the top of Messages for your contacts and how you can import Facebook profile photos to use as your contacts photos.

The photo feature for contacts in Messages is not a feature that can be adjusted. As for Facebook profile photos being used as contact photos, yes, you can, but it is dependant on if you have the contact's email address and if they share that same email address on their social-media profile.

Signin tosocial networks like Facebook and Twitter on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

The Contacts app matches the email address for your contact with the matching address on social media. If you haven't saved a contact's email address in the Contacts app, or if they don't share an email address on their social-media profile, that contact won't update on your device.

Best Regards
