Q: iTunes 12.5.1.21 cannot turn off shuffle

Since downloading the latest iTunes update for Windows I can't get shuffle to turn off anywhere. The shuffle in the top bar (where the songs show as they're playing) is turned off, but the Shuffle All that's next to every album and also on top of the artist page is turned on and I can't find a way to turn it off. I hate shuffle, and I never use it, and I never want to, and yet iTunes apparently wants me to. Any suggestions for what to do?

I don't think they want you to use shuffle without any possible way of turning it off.

Many people are having the same issue and it's obviously a programming glitch.

Drove me nuts too, but finally found the solution. At the very top-center of iTunes is the box showing the current song playing. To the left of the song title is the shuffle icon and to the right is the repeat icon. (De)select the one you want.

    Thx!

I had the same issue. What i ended up doing was:

    Select Control > Shuffle

In the drop down//slide out menu check 'Groupings' instead of 'Songs'

Even though my Shuffle was 'Off', it was still shuffling after the song I selected when I wanted to play an album. Likewise, you could also check 'Album' instead of 'Groupings' if you wanted it to shuffle AFTER the album was done, but if you're inside of a favorite playlist, instead of an album then 'Groupings' would be the way to go. Just my speculation, but it's working for me so far.

    Hope this helps.

After trying it out with several other songs/albums, my solution is not as consistent as I'd hoped. It only works SOME of the time. Oi, Apple...

I believe, like my solution, yours is one that works only sometimes and, for only certain items in the music library. Not sure how to figure out how to make it consistent.

Thats not the problem. Even after checking those boxes, it just keeps shuffling songs. No matter where you check that shuffle is OFF, it keeps shuffling.

Yeah, I tried all that. As you said, it works "sometimes". I've also found that clearing the Up Next box helps. Sometimes. But nothing is consistent.

    I've done:

Controls > Shuffle > Off; it still shuffles.

Controls > Shuffle > Albums or Controls > Shuffle > Groupings, it always shuffles every track.

Clicking on the icon in the "current track" window has no effect - it always shuffles.

There are things that look like shuffle buttons under the album art and at the top right of the main window; clicking either just goes to a different random track, does not disable shuffle.

The only thing I have found that doesn't pick a random track from my entire library to play next is to use the blue "Library" drop down at the top center of the main window to pick "Albums". Only in this view will it play an album in order. This is the preferred way to listen to symphonies.

Yeah, that's my experience, too. It works occasionally, and then, back to shuffle whether we want it or not.

Rats, I was wrong - picking Library > Albums doesn't help.

I just went to the Up Next lest (list button just to the right of the window showing the current track), and hit 'clear' to remove everything in there.

Playing an album now I can see that the upcoming tracks are just the tracks from the album, in order, so I am somewhat hopeful.

My question is: do real people test software anymore or is it all automated? These sorts of bugs should be obvious to real people.

I was having this problem and came here to find a solution, but I may have come up with one just now as I was searching through iTunes for a way to stop this madness.

I went up to "Controls" and in the drop down menu clicked "Shuffle".  I checked "ON" and checked "Albums".

Now when I play an album it plays straight through without shuffling the album or any other songs in my itunes.

After doing this "solution" you'll see the shuffle icon at the top is highlighted in a dark box, which you would think means "on" yet it actually mean "off".  If you click that icon and remove the box around it, then itunes will start shuffling through the whole library.  Basically it seems as though the controls are opposite to what they imply.

One curious thing though... after doing this, if I click "shuffle" beside an album, it just starts playing the album from the beginning without shuffling.  So I don't currently know how to actually shuffle a single album.

Edit... I went back to the itunes menu Controls > Shuffle > ON, but this time selected Songs instead of Albums.  Now when I click shuffle beside an album it actually shuffles that album, and I can also shuffle several albums by one artist.

It's an annoying set up.  Hopefully they'll straighten this out.

Does this work if you do not want to shuffle anything, at all, ever? That's my issue -- I don't use shuffle nor do I want to and I can't get it to stop. I want to listen to a single artist who has several albums and, prior the the update, I could do that with no issue. Now, it won't work at all. And every time it looks like it's fixed, the next song, artist, or album change proves that it's not.
