If I understand correctly, you updated iTunes and now it will not play podcasts and will freeze. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. There are a couple things we can try to see if iTunes will play the Podcast normally.
It sounds like this is happening to multiple podcasts, so it may be an issue with iTunes itself.
First, since the update, one thing we can try is to reboot the computer.
If it is still having the issue after that, we can see if the if there are other software that may be causing this issue. We can reboot into safe mode and see if it still persists.Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
If the issue still persists, we can try uninstall and reinstall the iTunes app.To reinstall iTunes, download it from Apple Downloads.
